Introduction
Bristol Grammar School (BGS) is a co-ed, independent day school in Bristol. Its list of notable alumni includes a number of prominent personalities, such as a Nobel laureate (Sir John Pople), the founder of Penguin Books (Sir Allen Lane) and members of both houses of the UK Parliament. [1]
In the Junior School, pupils have lessons in English, mathematics, science, ICT, history, geography, RS, MFL, PE & games, music, dance, drama, art & DT and PSHE.
Ensuring that they grow in self-confidence and independence of spirit, the school introduces children to the natural environment via the extensive Outdoor Education programme. Open events at BGS ensure that families learn more about the school prior to applying for a place. They include one-on-ones with staff members, tours of the school, a variety of activities on campus and refreshments. Booking of spots can be made via this form.

The 7+ assessment will test your child’s skills in the areas of English (literacy), Maths and Verbal Reasoning.
An offer will be made following their successful performance in the exams. To secure the place, you will be expected to pay an Acceptance Deposit of £250.
Bristol Grammar School 7 Plus (7+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships are not available to 7+ applicants. Bursaries are offered following a means-testing procedure and applications for these must be submitted at least ten days prior to the 7+ assessment in November. Please reach out to the Admissions Team for more details.
Bristol Grammar School 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format
The Bristol Grammar School 7 Plus (7+) exam consists of the following assessments:
- English
- Mathematics
- Verbal Reasoning
The English assessment examines comprehension and writing skills, including spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as the fluency of your child’s reading and their oral skills.
The Maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including their knowledge of times tables.
The Verbal Reasoning section of the exam is designed to test and assess their logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
