Introduction
Founded in 1943, Westminster Under is an independent preparatory school for boys. Originally located on the grounds of Westminster School, behind Westminster Abbey, as the school grew, it moved to Eccleston Square, and in 1981 relocated to its current home in St Vincent’s Square. Overlooking Westminster playing fields, the school has educated notable composers, actors, writers and MPs. [1]
Known for its conscientious and inspiring teaching staff, the curriculum is thorough and versatile, covering languages, history, geography, sciences, mathematics, ICT and other disciplines, supported by relevant contemporary technology.
Giving pupils the opportunity to broaden their interests, develop skills and make new friends, Westminster Under offers a broad range of extra-curricular activities, including drama, art and sport, and after-school clubs including fencing, Judo, chess, LAMDA, Karate, indoor cricket, cookery, clay modelling, robotics, tennis and animation. Further extending the students’ cultural experiences, the school also offers expeditions to local sites, including the Museums and West End musicals, and to national and international destinations, including Dorset, Scotland, Italy, France and Belgium. [2]
The comprehensive and holistic academic and non-academic offering sees many Westminster Under leavers gain scholarships and awards, and entry to the prestigious Westminster Great school, as well as to outstanding schools such as Eton, Winchester, Rugby and Dulwich. From these schools, they develop to become many of our cultural and political leaders, demonstrating their maturity and strong social and ethical awareness.

Westminster Under School 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format
The Westminster (WUS) Stage 1 exam for 7 Plus entry consists of:
Online Test
⦾ Reasoning
The Reasoning test will assess Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills, evaluating intelligence and logical thinking instead of acquired knowledge.
Written Papers
⦾ English
The English paper assesses comprehension and grammar skills and lasts 25 minutes.
⦾ Mathematics
The maths paper assesses problem-solving and arithmetic skills and lasts 20 minutes in length.
The examinations are designed to provide an understanding of current levels and to test potential. About 200-250 will take the exam and around 50 prospective pupils are then called back for a Stage 2 exam, consisting of a writing task, an interview and classroom-based activities.
Westminster Under School 7 Plus (7+) Interviews and Activities
Candidates who are successful in the exam will be called back for an activity and assessment session, which includes a short interview with the Master or a senior member of staff. The number called back is usually around 50.
Previous formats have included: candidates being split into 3 groups of 15-16 children for the activity sessions with teachers. Interviews take place in smaller break out groups of approx. 3-4 candidates. Questions can be subject-based or about a child’s family, interests and hobbies. Questions such as ‘Who do you admire?’ and ‘If you had two hours of free time, what would you do with it?’ have featured in the past.
Activities have included children being asked to: read a passage and then answer questions on it on a one to one basis with a teacher (recently, it was a passage from The HodgeHeg by Dick King Smith); a creative writing task, usually involving writing a passage about themselves, for example, ‘What Makes Me’; drawing about their hobbies; and group games, singing and drama activities.
Westminster Under School 7 Plus (7+) Exam Pass Marks and Target Scores
