Introduction
King’s College School, often referred to as King’s or KCS Wimbledon, is a highly prestigious educational institution located in southwest London. Catering for boys exclusively, it includes a junior department, known as KCJS, which was founded in 1912. Both schools share a truly outstanding selection of facilities, including a state-of-the-art sports centre. [1]
The syllabuses in the junior division are tailored to meet the interests and abilities of all students, regardless of their academic background. Boys are primarily taught by their form teacher, but also have specialist teachers for subjects such as art, music and sport.
The myriad of co-curricular opportunities allows the cohort to further invest in their development while forging firm friendships in the process. Gardening, debating, swimming, rugby and chess are just some of the most popular extras, which, coupled with outstanding pastoral care, ensure that boys adopt a goal-oriented mindset and grow in determination. [2]
KCJS nurtures an academically competitive yet diverse and welcoming community, where pupils can genuinely be themselves regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity or disability. To truly uphold this inclusive approach, the school does not tolerate any form of discrimination, demonstrating a firm commitment to the cause through actions, and not just words.

King’s College, Wimbledon, 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format
Entrance Exams: The seven plus exam will be held in early October. The examinations are designed to provide an understanding of current levels and to gauge potential. About 300 boys will take this exam.
All candidates sit papers in mathematics, English and Reasoning and there is also a listening test.
⦿ The listening test is 25 minutes long. Candidates are asked to listen to a recording and then follow a set of instructions based on what they have heard. Last year’s listening test comprised some instructional questions about a hippo – eg underline the picture of the hippo with three spots.
⦿ For the Maths paper, there are three sections. Candidates are given 10 minutes for each section. After each 10-minute period, they are directed to the next section. It’s not mandatory to answer every question; KCS assesses the completed work to gauge understanding. The three sections are:
a) Number work: This assesses the candidate’s grasp of numbers, addition and subtraction skills at 7+ level.
b) Mathematical Reasoning: In this section, candidates must articulate their mathematical understanding, often through words and sentences. Spelling errors are not penalised.
c) Investigation/Problem Solving Task: Here, the emphasis is on open-ended tasks. The school is keenly interested in the candidate’s approach, not just the final solution.
⦿ The English paper is 45 minutes and comprises both comprehension and creative writing sections. A previous King’s seven plus English paper asked candidates to write a story based on a picture cue of a girl with a scooter.
⦿ The Reasoning paper can include Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning questions. This year children were asked to look at a picture and answer questions about it.
