Introduction
King’s College School, also known as KCS, King’s and KCS Wimbledon, is an independent school in Wimbledon, London. Operational since 1829, it is one of the best schools in the UK and beyond, featuring an impressive notable alumni list that includes politicians, architects, an Olympic gold medallist and five Victoria Cross holders. In Sixth Form, students follow either the A level or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The curriculum for both options broadly reflects King’s aims to provide top-notch education, featuring relevant disciplines that underpin its strong reputation and effective offering.
King’s further supports learning through extensive extracurriculars and a well-integrated Personal Development Programme, which allows students to explore their social intelligence and deepen their cultural understanding. Music, drama and sporting facilities ensure the acquisition of non-academic skills, additionally enhanced through the provision of club activities such as chess, Philosophy Film Society, engineering and Music Theory Club. King’s hosts Open Evening in June, allowing prospective families to learn more about the admissions procedure through discussion with teachers and other members of the senior staff. King’s College School, Wimbledon, 16 Plus (16+) Admissions
All 16+ applicants should be registered with the school prior to sitting the entrance exams. The registration deadline is in October of the year preceding entry and the fee of £150 is non-refundable.
The exams are paper-based, assessing students’ skills across three areas. A review of current-school reports and references is also included in the admissions process. Please note that top-performing candidates in the exams will be invited for an interview, typically lasting 35 minutes.
Offers of places are posted in December, to be accepted by the deadline later the same month with a payment of a deposit.
King’s College School, Wimbledon, 16 Plus (16+) Scholarships and Bursaries
KCS offers a number of scholarships to 16+ applicants who succeed at satisfying its academic criteria. Art, Music, Drama and Sports Scholarships carry a fee reduction of £400 per annum, while Academic awards, also known as Rossetti and Fawcett Academic Scholarships, carry a £3000 and £1500 annual fee reduction, respectively.
All awards, with the exception of Academic Scholarships, are offered on the basis of practical assessments. Academic Scholarships are awarded to top-performing applicants in the 16+ selection process.
Successful 16+ candidates can also be considered for a means-tested bursary, if it’s determined that their household is in need of financial assistance. A bursary can cover up to 100% of fees and is subject to annual means testing.

The KCS Wimbledon 16+ exam consists of the following papers:
- English
- Mathematics
- General Paper
The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The Maths exam assesses problem-solving abilities and key skills at an age appropriate level.
