Introduction
Wycombe Abbey is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-19. It is predominantly a boarding school but does have a limited number of day places available for girls who live close to the school. Set in 170 acres of beautiful parkland, Wycombe Abbey provides girls with a safe and happy environment in which they flourish.
Girls who attend Wycombe Abbey achieve superb academic outcomes and many go on to study at the most prestigious universities around the world, such as Stanford University and New York University. Notable alumni include Kathy Wilkes, a philosopher; Mary Wakefield, a journalist; and Clarissa Ward, chief international correspondent for CNN.
Life outside of the classroom is important at Wycombe Abbey, as the school is keen for all pupils to develop into confident, well-rounded, empathetic young people. Supporting others is at the heart of school life, with many charities benefitting from the efforts of Wycombe Abbey girls.
Pastoral care is exemplary at Wycombe Abbey. Each pupil is valued as an individual and treated with respect. House staff are committed to helping girls feel comfortable and secure, and House Mothers mentor girls so that should any problem arise, it can be dealt with quickly and appropriately.
Wycombe Abbey: Admissions Process for 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 Entry
Visiting Wycombe Abbey is highly recommended if you want a place there for your daughter. A visit will enable you to explore the facilities and learn more about the school’s ethos. The school holds Open Mornings and Coffee mornings, and you can also arrange a private visit.
If you want your daughter to join Wycombe Abbey at the start of Year 9 (UIV), you need to fill out the online registration form by the start of June of Year 7 and pay the non-refundable £350 registration fee.
For the first stage of the admissions process, Wycombe Abbey will request a reference from your daughter’s current school and ask her to sit the online ISEB Common Pre-test during the autumn term of Year 8 before October. This test will be sat at your daughter’s current school, a recognised UK test centre or a local British Council Office.
Candidates’ references and ISEB Common Pre-test results will be reviewed carefully to enable Wycombe Abbey to decide who should be invited to continue to the second stage of the admissions process.
The second stage is Assessment Day, which will be in January of Year 8. It will enable your daughter to experience what life is like at Wycombe Abbey, and it enables Wycombe Abbey to see if she is a good fit for the school. Your daughter will be interviewed and will sit exams, written by Wycombe Abbey, in English, maths, humanities and a modern foreign language. She will also take a practical science assessment. If she wishes to, she can sit Greek and Latin papers too.
Later in January of Year 8, firm offers and waiting-list offers will be made. Academic scholarships and exhibitions will also be awarded based on performance in the exams.
Offers need to be accepted by the deadline, which will be early March of Year 8. If your daughter is offered a place and you accept it, you will need to pay an acceptance deposit.
Wycombe Abbey: Scholarships and Bursaries
For 13+ (UIV) entry, Wycombe Abbey offers the following:
- Academic scholarships (worth up to 5% of the school’s fees each year)
- Academic exhibitions (£600 per year)
- Music scholarships (free tuition on two instruments or one instrument and voice)
- Music exhibitions (free tuition on one instrument)
- Choral awards (free voice tuition)
Academic awards are offered to candidates with a firm offer who excelled throughout the admissions process.

Wycombe Abbey offers means-tested bursaries, worth up to 100% of the school’s fees, to a limited number of girls whose families cannot afford the fees. The application form for Year 9 entry will need to be submitted by the start of September of Year 8.

Entrance assessments for Year 9: ISEB Common Pre-test, English paper, maths paper, humanities paper, MFL paper, practical science assessment and interview
Stage 1
To join in Year 9 (UIV), for the first stage of the assessment process, your daughter will be asked to complete an online assessment called the ISEB Common Pre-test, which assesses skills in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The test provides a universal and standardised measure of attainment, ability and potential.
You will need to register your daughter for the ISEB Common Pre-test on the official ISEB website.
Stage 2
If your daughter performs well in the ISEB Common Pre-test and has a strong reference from her current school, she will be invited to Wycombe Abbey’s Assessment Day for stage 2 of the admissions process.
Stage 2 consists of exams in English, maths, humanities and a modern foreign language, as well as a practical science assessment and an interview.
The English exam will include a comprehension section, which will assess your daughter’s ability to understand a piece of text and make inferences. The exam will also include a creative writing section, which will assess your daughter’s ability to use her imagination, structure her work well and use language effectively. Her spelling, grammar and punctuation will also be evaluated.
The maths exam will test her knowledge of topics covered in the relevant national curriculum stage, such as statistics and algebra. It will also look at her mathematical reasoning skills.
The humanities exam and MFL exam will test her knowledge and competency in these subjects.
The practical science assessment will reveal whether she can follow instructions and has a flair for science.
The interview is a chance for your daughter to show that she is the sort of person that is suited to life at Wycombe Abbey. She can talk about her interests and passion for learning, demonstrating her social skills in the process.
