Loughborough Grammar School: 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 Entry Information

Written by Louise Lang

Introduction

Loughborough Grammar School (LGS) was founded in the 15th century and educates boys from the start of Year 6 to the end of Sixth Form. It has both day and boarding places available, with boarders benefitting from LGS being very close to the centre of Loughborough.

The school’s most recent ISI report highlights that boys’ academic achievements at LGS are excellent. Pupils are motivated to learn, able to think for themselves and are fabulous communicators. These attributes set them up well for life after school.

Not only do boys do well in the classroom, but they also thrive outside of the classroom, taking their pick from a plethora of extra-curricular activities. Wherever a boy’s talents lie, there will be something suitable for him to get involved in. Those who are passionate about performing, for example, can sign up for the school’s drama and musical productions.

The mental well-being of pupils is taken seriously at LGS. Staff get to know the pupils as individuals, meaning they can deal with any issues that arise quickly and appropriately. Importantly, boys feel that they are safe in the caring community at the school.

Loughborough Grammar School: Admissions Process for 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 Entry

LGS warmly invites you to attend an Open Morning and arrange to have a personal tour of the school on a school day. Visiting in person is the best way to decide whether you feel the school is the right place for your son, but a virtual tour can be arranged if this is not possible.

Once you decide you want your son to attend LGS, you should fill in the registration form by the December deadline, when your son is in Year 8. Please be aware that you will need to pay a registration fee at this point: £100 for candidates who are based in the UK and are applying for a day place, and £130 for overseas candidates and those who are applying for a boarding place.

To join in Year 9, there are two possible pathways for entry:

  1. Your son can sit the Common Entrance exam if they attend an independent school.
  2. Your son can sit LGS’s own papers (English and maths) if he does not attend an independent school or if his current school decides this is the best pathway for him.

Regardless of whether your son follows Pathway 1 or 2, a report from his current school will be required and closely reviewed as part of the admissions process. Additionally, your son may be interviewed to help the school make a final decision on whether to offer him a place.

If your son is offered a place, you will need to fill out the acceptance form and pay a deposit. More information about the deposit can be found here.

Do contact the school if you want any more details about the admissions process or if you want to clarify anything. The school is willing to assess late applicants, so it is also worth contacting LGS if you miss the registration deadline. Contact details are given lower down.
