Introduction
James Allen’s Girls’ School, also known as JAGS, is a day school in Dulwich, South London. The oldest independent girls’ school in the county, it performs outstandingly well in public examinations. JAGS is a highly selective facility, which has produced many notable figures in the areas of arts, literature and science. [1]
The academic provision is underpinned by staff’s efforts to encourage cross-curricular learning and place research at the centre of pupils’ current and further education. Asking questions and expressing ideas are considered fundamental to learning, grounding the educational experience in a comprehensive understanding across a range of disciplines, such as science, languages, humanities and mathematics.
The activities programme is also progressive, fostering a can-do approach among girls who benefit fully from the vast selection of available pursuits. Taught to embrace their talents and creativity, they engage in everything from choir and gardening to chess and robotics, maximising their resourcefulness and versatility through both individual effort and teamwork. [2]
JAGS girls regularly visit local museums, galleries and theatres as part of their educational journey. As a result, they develop a profound aesthetic and cultural sensibility, which perfectly blends with their competitive academic qualifications and thus moulds the pursuit of their personal goals into a genuinely pleasant and productive experience.

James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) 13 Plus (13+) Admissions
13+ entry into JAGS is through two routes: deferred entry and chance vacancy entry. Deferred entry applicants are assessed while they are in Year 6 and are expected to stay at their current school till Year 8. As chance vacancies sometimes arise, applicants who wish to apply for Year 9 places through this route will sit entrance examinations while in Year 8.
The application deadline for deferred entry is in October of Year 6, and for chance vacancies, the deadline is in the same month of Year 8.
- The deferred entry route includes an online exam, prior to which candidates will be invited to attend a Welcome Morning (in Autumn). On the day, they will complete a writing task, partake in a group activity and attend an interview.
- The chance vacancy admissions process includes a different type of online exam alongside papers in Mathematics and English. Those who do well in the tests will be invited to the school to be interviewed. JAGS will also obtain a reference form your daughter’s current school.
James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) 13 Plus (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Means-tested bursaries are available to all Senior School applicants whose parents struggle with paying the fees. They are reviewed annually once awarded and may increase/decrease in value, subject to changes in your finances.
In order to be considered for this award, you should indicate your interest in the registration form so that JAGS can send you a bursary form. Please note that, as part of the evaluation process, the school will look closely at your finances, for which you will be asked to provide supporting documentation.
Deferred 13+ entry applicants can also apply for Art, Music and Sports Scholarships. Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance in the entrance examinations, while the others are offered on the basis of auditions/trials.
