Loughborough Grammar School: 12 Plus (12+)/Year 8 Entry Information

Written by Louise Lang

Introduction

Loughborough Grammar School (LGS) is an independent school for boys that offers day and boarding places. While many single-sex schools have become co-educational, LGS believes that a boys-only environment is better for boys when they have reached secondary education, as teaching styles can be used that meet the specific needs of boys.

Pupils at LGS progress well academically because they work hard and benefit from superb teaching. In 2024, an impressive 57% of GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range, and 32% of A Level grades were A* or A. Many leavers go on to study at Russell Group universities, specialist medical schools and law schools.

Life outside of the classroom at LGS is vibrant. There are a large number of clubs to choose from, meaning there is something to suit all tastes. Joining the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is an excellent way to develop teamwork skills, gain confidence and learn to be responsible while having fun and making new friends. Once your son is in Year 10, he can participate in the respected Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The school community at Loughborough Grammar School is warm, inclusive and supportive, helping boys to feel safe and secure. All staff are on hand to offer support and guidance when necessary. In Year 8, your son will be in a House, with a Housemaster and Tutor who will get to know him well and ensure he is cared for.

Loughborough Grammar School: Admissions Process for 12 Plus (12+)/Year 8 Entry

If you are thinking about registering your son for a place at LGS, it is a good idea to visit. This will allow you to get a real feel for the school and decide whether your son would flourish there. You can choose between arranging a Personal Tour and attending an Open Morning. You can also book your son onto a Taster Day.

To register, which you should do by the deadline in December of Year 7, you need to fill out the online form and pay the registration fee. The fee is £100 if you are based in the UK and applying for a day place. It is £130 if you are applying for a boarding place or are based overseas.

The entrance exam for Year 8 will be held in January of Year 7. Your son will need to perform well in the exam and have a good report from his current school to be offered a place. Some candidates will also need to attend a meeting at LGS after the exam before a decision is made.

The entrance exam consists of the following:

  • An English comprehension paper
  • An English writing paper
  • A maths paper

Offers will be made within a fortnight of the entrance exam and must be accepted by the deadline stated in the offer letter.

Loughborough Grammar School will assess boys throughout the year, so do contact the school if your son misses the January entrance exam.

Loughborough Grammar School: 12 Plus (12+)/Year 8 Scholarships and Bursaries

If your son excels in the Year 8 entrance exam, he will be invited to an assessment interview, which may result in him being given a Burton Academic Scholarship. This award carries a small monetary reward.

Typically, bursaries (assisted places) are not given to boys starting at LGS in Year 8.
