Introduction
Wycombe Abbey is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-19. It has a limited number of day places available for those living nearby. Miss Frances Dove, a pioneer who strongly believed that girls should have the same opportunities as boys, founded Wycombe Abbey in 1896, and the school has maintained her vision throughout its history.
Academically, Wycombe Abbey is excellent. Committed specialist teachers deliver engaging lessons that encourage girls to be curious learners rather than passive recipients of information. Students are challenged so they reach their full academic potential. Recently, an impressive 97.5% of GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range.
Outside of the curriculum, there are plenty of activities for girls to get involved in, including over 50 clubs and societies. Additionally, the school holds Activity Days, during which pupils are taken off their regular timetables to partake in extended projects. School trips are also an important part of school life, enabling girls to immerse themselves in different cultures and develop an awareness of themselves as global citizens.
Pupil wellbeing is taken very seriously at Wycombe Abbey. The Health and Wellbeing Centre is open around the clock and always has at least one nurse on duty. Two professional counsellors provide both individual and group counselling.
Wycombe Abbey: Admissions Process for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry
Attending an Open Morning at Wycombe Abbey is a great way to find out more about the school. You can also attend a Coffee Morning, but please be aware that places are limited, and priority is given to families who have already registered but have not visited before. Additionally, a private visit can be arranged once you have registered and it is the year before you hope your daughter will join Wycombe Abbey.
To register your daughter for 11+ (UIII) entry, you will need to fill out the online form and pay the non-refundable £350 registration fee by the beginning of June when your daughter is in Year 5. If you are applying for a full bursary, you are welcome to contact the school to discuss the registration fee if paying it would be difficult for you.
The first stage of the assessment process is the ISEB Common Pre-test, which your daughter needs to take before November of Year 6. This online test will ideally be sat at your daughter’s current school. If this is not possible, it can be sat at a British Council Office or a recognised test centre. Wycombe Abbey will provide you with all the relevant information.
The second stage is Assessment Day at Wycombe Abbey in November of Year 6. Your daughter will take part in a group activity on Assessment Day, be interviewed and take one-hour exams in English and maths.
A reference from your daughter’s current school will also be reviewed as part of the admissions process. The aim is to offer places to girls who will make the most of life at Wycombe Abbey and be able to cope with its curriculum.
Firm offers will be made in December of Year 6 and need to be accepted by the deadline in March of Year 6. An acceptance deposit will also need to be paid.
Wycombe Abbey: Scholarships and Bursaries
For 11+ entry, Wycombe Abbey offers the following:
- Academic scholarships
- Academic exhibitions
- Music scholarships
- Music exhibitions
- Choral awards
A small number of successful candidates for 11+ (UIII) entry will be invited to Wycombe Abbey to sit exams for the academic awards.
To be offered a music award, girls will need to demonstrate that they are gifted musically.
If you are unable to afford the school’s fees but your daughter would thrive at Wycombe Abbey, you can apply for a means-tested bursary. Bursaries are worth up to 100% of the fees. Please be aware that only a limited number of bursaries are available, and you need to submit your application by the start of September of the year before entry.

Entrance assessments for Year 7: ISEB Common Pre-test, English paper, maths paper, group activity and interview
Stage 1
To join in Year 7 (UIII), for the first stage of the assessment process, your daughter will be asked to complete an online assessment called the ISEB Common Pre-test, which assesses skills in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The test provides a universal and standardised measure of attainment, ability and potential.
You will need to register your daughter for the ISEB Common Pre-test on the official ISEB website.
Stage 2
For the second stage of the assessment process, your daughter will sit an English paper and a maths paper, take part in a group activity and be interviewed.
The English paper will include both comprehension and creative writing sections. The comprehension section will assess your daughter’s ability to read a piece of text and understand its meaning. In the creative writing section, she will need to demonstrate that she can structure her work properly, stay on task and use her imagination, as well as show that her spelling, punctuation and grammar are of a high standard.
The maths paper will evaluate your daughter’s mathematical problem-solving skills and arithmetic skills. You can expect there to be questions covering topics from the relevant national curriculum stage, e.g. algebra, geometry and statistics.
The group activity and interview will enable the school, amongst other things, to observe your daughter’s social skills.
