Written by Louise Lang

Introduction

Founded in 1958, Wilmington Grammar School for Girls (WGSG) is a selective grammar for girls with a co-educational Sixth Form. It is a Kent-based school, catering for 840 pupils in line with an ethos that adheres to the motto In pursuit of excellence. [1]

WGSG has specialist status in mathematics and computing. Its curriculum aims to challenge girls, providing for their intellectual inquisitiveness through effective lessons across a variety of disciplines, including languages, sciences and humanities.

Beyond the classroom, the school offers pupils an array of opportunities to develop skills and gain valuable experiences. Whether it be studying Mandarin or participating in drama productions, the activities on offer ensure that girls perform at a high standard and grow a strong awareness of their own abilities. [2]

WGSG endeavours to inspire students to have sky-high aspirations. Students’ achievements come in many forms, from acing exams to cultivating meaningful connections. That being said, the school acknowledges the need for continuous improvement, so it remains committed to expanding its learning opportunities each year.

Nurturing a passion for education and helping students secure a prosperous future is at the core of the school’s philosophy. The inspiring, challenging and encouraging learning atmosphere, where everyone is treated equally, was recently rated “Good” by Ofsted. [3]

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

Most Kent-based selective schools require pupils to sit the Kent 11 Plus exam, including WGSG. The Kent Test consists of two multiple-choice tests:

1. An hour-long exam that is divided into two sections that cover English and maths. Each section has a 5-minute practice exercise and a 25-minute test.

2. A 60-minute test that focuses on Reasoning. It is divided into three sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning

Pupils must also complete a 40-minute writing task, which will not form part of the final 11 Plus result but can be used in any borderline or appeal cases.

How to Prepare for the Wilmington Grammar School for Girls 11 Plus (11+) Exam?

The Kent Test requires children to have a solid knowledge of a number of subjects, so if parents suspect that their daughter has a weaker area, we recommend using our practice papers to highlight this. Introduced early in the revision timetable, our resources can act as a diagnostic, showcasing academic strengths and weaknesses.

Please note that, for optimal exam performance, your daughter’s study schedule should be split into ‘little and often’ study sessions. Students who approach preparation in such a methodical way generally have a competitive advantage over their peers who prefer a less structured approach.

Our practice tests tend to make the preparation process easily manageable and less demanding in order for your daughter to feel confident and less stressed about the upcoming Kent Test. Due to their practicality and effectiveness, they are used successfully by hundreds of thousands of students every year.

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls 11 Plus (11+) Exam Pass Marks and Target Scores
