Introduction
Founded in 1915, Torquay Girls’ Grammar School is a selective grammar that teaches over 850 girls aged 11-18. In 2011, it gained academy status, having previously been one of the first UK schools to achieve specialist status in humanities and one of the first to offer the AQA Baccalaureate. [1]
Torquay Girls’ is often ranked in the top 10 state schools in the South West. As such, it offers a packed curriculum, supported by staff’s active efforts to provide quality teaching. Students’ achievements across the syllabus are strong, bolstering the school’s reputation for producing exceptional GCSE results. Recently, almost half of all the GCSE grades awarded to the Year 11 class was a grade 8 or 9. [2]
The rich selection of extracurricular activities allows girls to polish their non-academic skills and develop further interests. Guitar and ukulele Club, textiles, debating, rounders and dance are just some of the available opportunities, aimed at maximising the potential and ambitions of the cohort in fun and engaging ways. [3]
Torquay Girls’ pastoral system is a source of pride. Being a smaller school allows staff to establish strong connections with all students, ensuring that they feel happy and secure in their learning environment.
Through persistent efforts, Torquay Girls’ Grammar aims to cultivate an atmosphere that’s conducive to students’ preferred learning styles and social dynamics. As a result, children express themselves freely and actively participate in each aspect of school life. Their enthusiasm for taking on responsibilities is impressive, as is their eagerness to contribute to their local and wider communities.
