Thomas Telford UTC: Entry Procedure for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7

Written by Louise Lang

Introduction

Thomas Telford University Technical College in Wolverhampton is a co-educational school for pupils aged 11-19. It is distinct from traditional secondary schools because it aims to prepare pupils for exciting careers in construction, the built environment (our surroundings that humans have built) and related IT work.

Employers are closely involved with the school, guiding the curriculum and providing pupils with valuable work experience. They also mentor, conduct site visits, offer careers advice and so much more. Your child could really thrive in this hands-on, forward-thinking environment. Imagine your child learning from industry leaders and gaining skills that will set them up for a successful future in cutting-edge careers.

The majority of Year 13 leavers secure apprenticeships or go to university. In 2024, apprenticeships included a Civil and Transportation Engineering Apprenticeship with Balfour Beatty Vinci and a Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship with BAM. If you’re looking for a school that could give your child real-world skills and open doors to their future, Thomas Telford UTC might be the perfect fit.

If your child is passionate about STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) or is interested in construction and design careers, Thomas Telford UTC is definitely worth considering.

Attending one of the information evenings is a fantastic idea. It will give you and your child the opportunity to learn more about the school and ask any questions you have. We understand that choosing a senior school for your child will be one of the hardest decisions you make. Visiting a school can give you a feel for the place and make the decision that bit easier.

To apply for a Year 7 place, fill out your Local Authority’s application form by the end of October when your child is in Year 6, listing Thomas Telford UTC as one of your preferred schools. At the start of March, you’ll find out if your child has been offered one of the 150 available Year 7 places.

If there are more than 150 applicants, your child will be invited to sit a non-verbal reasoning test in November of Year 6. The results will place students into one of five ability bands, numbered 1 to 5, with Band 1 being the highest. The school will offer places to 30 children from each band, ensuring a mixed-ability intake. This balanced approach helps create a diverse learning environment.

Priority in each band is given to:

  1. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  2. Children who are looked after or were previously looked after
  3. Children who live closest to the school

Important: You don’t need to apply separately for the non-verbal reasoning test. Once the 31st October deadline has passed, Thomas Telford UTC will send you all the details and an invitation for the test.

Thomas Telford UTC: Year 7 Entry NFER Non-Verbal Reasoning Test

The non-verbal reasoning test will assess your child’s ability to solve problems using visual information. Questions will use patterns and shapes. Non-verbal reasoning is not covered in the national curriculum, so your child may not be familiar with the types of questions that will be asked.

Non-verbal reasoning tests can be used to identify pupils who are likely to be good at STEAM subjects and have strong spatial reasoning skills.

We recommend that your child practises non-verbal reasoning questions so they can do well in the test. Their performance will not affect whether they get offered a place, but doing well will boost their confidence. Also, developing their non-verbal reasoning skills will help them confidently access Thomas Telford UTC’s curriculum, which has a focus on STEAM subjects, ensuring they get off to a great start in Year 7.
