Introduction

 

Sutton High School (SHS) is an independent school for girls from the ages 3-18 located in Sutton, Greater London. It is run by the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST).

 

SHS was founded in 1884 as part of a pioneering movement that started nearly 150 years ago. Together with other GDST schools, the school defied Victorian attitudes towards women by offering a challenging academic curriculum to girls.  

 

A number of female scientists, writers and thinkers who challenged perceptions and shattered stereotypes are among the school’s alumni.

 

The broad curriculum includes geography, history, religious studies, computer science, design technology and science, and also provides Spanish, French, German and Latin as language options.

 

The forms are small enough for every teacher to know and celebrate every girl. The pastoral care includes form tutors (supported by a Head of Year), a medical manager and an in-house school counselor, all led and coordinated by SHS’s specialist Director of Pastoral Care. 

 

Competitions in events such as debating, drama, chess, swimming, music, baking, netball and hockey are highly encouraged.

 

Pupils in Years 7 to 10 also have weekly lessons in Personal and Social Responsibility, a unique subject led by a specialist teacher, which helps build girls’ emotional literacy and resilience through lectures in mental wellbeing, identity, justice, sexual health, money management and alcohol awareness. 

 

Co-curriculum activities include participation in various clubs such as hockey, netball, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming (in the school’s own pool) and more. SHS’ renowned Senior Choir recently sang at Disneyland Paris.

 

From making ice cream using liquid nitrogen in STEM Society to uncovering a journalistic scoop in Young Reporters, the girls perpetually invest in preserving the school’s century-old motto Fortiter, Fideliter, Feliciter (Boldy, faithfully, happily).

Sutton High School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

 

Registering your daughter as a candidate for entry into Sutton High School will require completing and submitting a registration form, along with a non-refundable registration fee of £100.

 

The entrance examinations consist of an online test and a paper-based exam. Girls will also attend a brief interview with a member of the Senior Staff. All girls sitting the 11+ entrance examination are automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship.

 

Sutton High School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

 

The Sutton High School 11+ Quest online exam consists of the following topics:

 

• Mathematics
• English
• Verbal Reasoning

 

The maths module will test your child on what they have been taught at school in their maths lessons, not going beyond Year 5 work. It will also assess their reasoning skills and ability to apply their mathematical knowledge. There are 20 questions, but candidates will not necessarily have time to answer them all

 

The English module will include a text that could be fiction or non-fiction. Questions will be used to evaluate the standard of your child’s reading comprehension, the breadth of their vocabulary and their ability to use grammar and punctuation correctly.

 

The verbal reasoning module will assess your child’s aptitude for solving problems that are language-based. They may, for example, have to identify synonyms and antonyms.
