If you are considering applying for a place in Year 7 for your daughter at Surbiton High School, please read on. We will give you key information about the school, including how to register for a place, what the entrance exam will be like and how your daughter can prepare for it.

 

Surbiton High School is an independent school. It comprises a boys’ prep school, a girls’ prep school and a girls’ senior school. The prep schools cover Reception to Year 6, and the senior school covers Year 7 to the end of Sixth Form.

 

The academic curriculum at Surbiton High School is extensive. In Year 7, your daughter will study traditional subjects, such as maths, English and history and non-traditional subjects, such as philosophy & religious studies and drama. She will be encouraged to be an active learner who can work independently and collaboratively. 

 

A thriving co-curricular programme will enable your daughter to develop holistically. She can pursue her passions and discover new interests. Available activities include horse riding, dance, drama and gardening. Your daughter will also be able to be a part of the Community Outreach Programme. As part of this programme, Surbiton High School pupils run a community bank, providing those in need with a range of items, such as maternity supplies, books and toys. This is a fantastic initiative your daughter could sign up for.

 

Pastoral care at Surbiton High is exemplary. Your daughter will have a form tutor who will get to know her well and offer support and guidance when necessary. Additionally, the PSHE curriculum and well-being programme will teach your daughter strategies to maintain good mental health.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Surbiton High School

 

Visiting Surbiton High School is the best way to start the admissions process. The school holds regular Open Mornings, during which you can listen to presentations, take a tour and ask questions. You can also arrange a personal tour. 

If you decide your daughter would thrive at Surbiton High, you should then fill out an application form. Please note that you must submit the application form by the deadline in October if you are applying for a scholarship (other than an academic scholarship) or bursary. Otherwise, the deadline is in November. You will have to pay a registration fee of £200 (£250 if you are based overseas). 

 

Surbiton High will contact your child’s current school to ask for a report on your child’s academic ability and potential. 

 

In November of Year 6, on a Saturday, your daughter will take an entrance exam at Surbiton High. The exam consists of online English and maths assessments and a written creative writing exercise. 

 

In December or early January, your daughter will return to Surbiton High for an interview/small group discussion. A senior member of staff will lead this, and your daughter will participate with up to two other girls.

 

In early February, you will hear whether your daughter has been offered a place and whether, if relevant, she has secured a scholarship and/or bursary. If she has been offered a place, you must accept it by early March by filling out the paperwork and paying the £1,000 deposit.

Surbiton High School: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry

 

Scholarships 

 

Scholarships are not means-tested; they are allocated on merit. The following scholarships are available for Year 7 entry:

All of these must be applied for by the October deadline, except for the Academic Scholarship. (All candidates who sit the entrance exam in November are automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship.)

Bursaries

 

Church Schools Foundation Bursaries are available for Year 7 entry. They are means-tested awards that are reviewed annually. Only a limited number are available, and they will be awarded to the most able students from low-income families. The bursaries are not worth 100% of the fees, so you would have to contribute to the cost of your daughter’s education even if she were to receive a bursary.

You will no doubt want your daughter to be fully prepared for the admissions process, so we shall discuss this now.

 

Surbiton High School: Entrance Exam for Year 7 Entry

 

The entrance exam will test your daughter’s English and maths skills. There will be an English assessment consisting of an online comprehension and a hand-written creative writing exercise, as well as an entirely online maths assessment. 

 

Your daughter will be tested on what she has covered in school in Year 5 and the start of Year 6 for both English and maths.

 

She will use an iPad to complete the online elements.

 

English assessment

 

The English assessment will last about 50-60 minutes. 

 

The online English questions will be on a given passage (fiction or non-fiction), testing your daughter’s ability to understand written information and make inferences. Questions will also assess the maturity of your daughter’s vocabulary. 

 

The creative writing exercise will enable your daughter to showcase her writing skills by responding to a task based on the comprehension passage. She will be expected to, amongst other things, spell accurately, have a wide vocabulary, use punctuation correctly and write engagingly. She should also show that she can structure her work using paragraphs and use a range of sentence structures and lengths for effect.

 

Maths assessment

 

The maths assessment will last about 30 minutes.

 

The questions will cover the following topics:

 

• Number
• Shape and Space
• Measurement
• Data handling 

 

Your daughter must be proficient with the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, simple fractions and simple decimals. She must also know her multiplication tables because calculators are not allowed. 

 

Questions will assess your daughter’s mathematical problem-solving skills using charts, diagrams and tables.

 

As the second stage of the process, your daughter will attend a group interview.

 

Surbiton High School: Interview/Group Discussion

 

The interview/group discussion is a chance for Surbiton High to find out more about your daughter. A senior team member will chat with your daughter and two other girls. Your daughter will be asked about her hobbies and why she wants to attend Surbiton High.

 

The staff member will gauge your daughter’s individual abilities and how well she interacts with the other candidates. She should show that she can listen and contribute to an academic discussion.

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Year 7 Entry Procedure to Surbiton High School

Reading a variety of books will expand your daughter’s vocabulary, spark her creativity and improve her reading comprehension, helping her perform well in the online English test and written exercise. 

 

• Ensure your daughter spends time on her interests

 

It is good for your daughter’s well-being to spend time doing things she likes, and it will give her plenty to talk about at her group interview. 

 

• Discuss current affairs with your daughter

 

Discussing current affairs appropriate for your daughter’s age will help prepare her for the group interview and get her interested in the wider world. Ask her questions about topical or controversial issues so she develops the ability to articulate her opinion. Also, please share your opinion so she can practise her listening skills.

 

• Revise work from Years 5 and 6

 

Help your daughter revise her Year 5 work and what she does in Year 6 before the entrance exam. This is the work that will be tested, making this crucial. You can help her pinpoint the areas she finds challenging and spend more time on these. Research has shown that children in Years 5 and 6 can typically focus for around 30 minutes at a time, so keep study sessions short. You may be interested in a tutor at this stage.

 

• Ensure your daughter eats healthily and gets plenty of sleep and exercise

 

A healthy diet, sufficient sleep and exercise will help your daughter maintain good mental and physical health, reduce stress during the lead-up to her entrance exam and boost her brain function.

 

• Praise your daughter

 

Please praise your daughter for her efforts. This will help her stay motivated. Talk to her about having a growth mindset, which is the belief that you can improve your skills with time, effort and resilience.
