Introduction
Founded in 1885 by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Mary’s School Ascot is a Roman Catholic boarding school for girls aged between 11 and 18 years. Preference is given to girls who are Roman Catholic and faith plays an important role in school life, with the whole school gathering in the chapel for hymns and prayer each morning.
The school, which has just 380 pupils, occupies a 55-acre site in Ascot and accepts around 40 new girls into Year 7 (11+) each year. St. Mary’s School Ascot 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The 11+ entrance exam at St. Mary’s School Ascot consists of three papers:
- English
- Mathematics
- General Paper
The English paper assesses knowledge of basic rules of syntax, among other things. Pupils will be expected to construct and punctuate a sentence, as well as form a paragraph correctly, and answer questions based on information given in a passage from fiction or non-fiction texts. Displaying a range of accurately spelled vocabulary while writing narrative, descriptive or persuasive pieces will be highly regarded.
The maths exam tests problem-solving and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, geometry, algebra and statistics. Pupils should be able to convert decimals to and from fractions; measure length, area, money and weight; coordinate axes; calculate an average; construct triangles from given data; draw and interpret bar charts and pie charts and demonstrate knowledge of directed numbers, among other things.
The General Paper covers a variety of skills, including Non-Verbal Reasoning, logic puzzles, science, graded spelling and general knowledge. The paper is designed to evaluate pupils’ ability to think systematically rather than to test acquired knowledge.
