Introduction

Solihull School is a coeducational independent school situated near the centre of Solihull, West Midlands. Founded in 1560, it is considered the oldest school in town.

Solihull School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

The closing date for Year 7 applications is in September. Following registration, which includes a £75 fee, your child will be invited to sit entrance examinations in November.

An offer will be made on the basis of successful performance in the examinations and a strong current-school reference. Borderline candidates may be interviewed by the Head and other staff members.

The school will inform you of the results in December. The deadline for replies is in March. Please note that acceptance of a place includes a payment of a £400 deposit.

Solihull School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Solihull School awards scholarships at the discretion of the Head. They carry a 10-15% remission on tuition fees. At 11+, Solihull provides Academic, Music, Art & Design and Sport Scholarships, which, if needed, can be coupled with a bursary.

Bursaries are awarded to children who have performed well in the examination but whose parents cannot afford to pay the full fees. Bursaries are on a sliding scale and can provide full fee remission and, in some cases, further support for extras such as school uniform, lunches and travel.

In general, households with an income of up to £75,000 are likely to be eligible for a bursary. To apply for this award, you should declare your interest in writing by the appropriate closing date for registrations. For more information, please contact the school.

Solihull School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The Solihull School 11+ entrance examination consists of the following papers:

  • English  
  • Mathematics 
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning


The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.

The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper may include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.

The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
