Introduction
Located in Rochester, Kent, Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (The Math) is a boys’ grammar school. It educates around 1,450 students aged 11-18 and was one of the first 100 schools in the UK to be designated a National Teaching School. [1]
The Math provides a challenging academic curriculum and employs a progressive approach to both teaching and learning. This ethos is reflected in the modern facilities and engaging lessons delivered by experienced staff, boosting boys’ skills in science, technology, humanities, languages and many other areas.
The extracurricular offering further enhances the learning experiences, providing for pupils’ non-academic interests as part of an ambitious activities programme. Model United Nations, politics, tennis, choir, French Club, drama and Mandarin Club are some of its highlights, promoting a spirit of inquisitiveness that helps boys uncover their hidden talents. [2]
Recently, 56% of all grades fell within the 7-9 range, demonstrating students’ consistent efforts and commitment to their studies. In the subject of mathematics, 69.3% of the grades were within this superior 7-9 range.
At the core of its philosophy, the school encourages kindness and celebrates diversity, ensuring that every voice is heard and every individual is valued. Harmonious relationships are fostered even in the face of difficulty, prompting pupils to tackle challenges proactively. In this and many other ways, The Math nurtures the welcoming nature of its learning environment and thoroughly prepares students for their future endeavours.
