Introduction

Royal Hospital School is a co-educational independent day and boarding school with naval traditions. The school was founded in 1712 to provide boys from seafaring backgrounds with the privilege of learning arithmetic and navigation.

In Year 7, the subjects studied are: English, mathematics, science, modern foreign languages, classical civilisation, geography, history, religious studies and creative arts.

The wide range of co-curricular activities includes Aerobics, Amnesty International, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Art & Design, Debating Society, Horse Riding, Lifesaving, Model United Nations, Robotics and Sailing.

The enriched academic curriculum and wealth of co-curricular activities encourage pupils to step outside their comfort zones and learn to take risks with confidence. To ensure that they go on to lead purposeful and happy lives, RHS instills in its pupils traditional values of loyalty and service, which, coupled with a modern education, fully prepare them for the world of tomorrow.

Royal Hospital School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

If you wish your child to enter the school in Year 7, you should ideally register two years in advance of entry and, latest, by the end of the deadline in November of the year preceding entry. Subject to availability of places, late applications may be also considered.

Following the registration, your child will be asked to come to the school to attend an interview with a senior member of staff. A current-school reference, requested around this time, must be received before an offer of a place is made.

Your child will be asked to sit formal 11+ entrance examinations in November of the year preceding entry. Places are normally offered in early December and should be accepted by the deadline in March. Acceptance of a place includes a contract (to be signed by you) and a payment of an acceptance deposit.

Royal Hospital School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Academic Exhibitions and Scholarships may be awarded on the basis of your child’s outstanding performance in the tests and interview, as well as a positive current-school reference. Bursaries are reviewed annually and may increase/decrease subject to changes in your financial circumstances, the child’s progress, attitude, behaviour, etc.
