Introduction
Roedean is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11–18. The school was founded in 1885 and occupies a picturesque spot just outside the coastal town of Brighton on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Its grand Victorian buildings look out over green playing fields to the sea beyond, and there is even a ‘secret’ tunnel that runs from the school to the sea.
At Key Stage 3, girls study a wide range of subjects and have five periods of sport each week. The school’s abundant enrichment programme provides girls with opportunities to try a wide range of different academic, physical and creative activities throughout the year. Girls at the school consistently perform well in public exams and, in recent years, 93.2% of GCSE results were in the A*–B (9–5) range.
The school offers day places, plus weekly, flexi and full boarding places. All girls are fully integrated into one of four Houses, which provide a sense of community and exceptional facilities. Currently, just under 60% of students are boarders and around 50% of all students are from overseas.

Roedean 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Roedean 11+ examinations consist of the following:
- English
- Mathematics
- Verbal Reasoning
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Puzzles & Problem-Solving
- Creative Comprehension
The English section will assess your child’s ability to answer questions on a given passage, which could be fiction or non-fiction. They may also need to answer questions testing the standard of their spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The maths section will not go beyond the Year 5 maths curriculum. Topics covered could be arithmetic, geometry, measurement, numbers and statistics. Questions will evaluate your child’s mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, as well as their ability to work through multi-step questions.
The verbal reasoning section will look at how well your child can solve problems that use written information. They might, for example, have to identify a pair of synonyms from two groups of words.
The non-verbal reasoning section will determine your child’s ability to solve problems using visual information. They might, for example, have to study a shape and then decide which set of pictured blocks from the selection given could be used to build it.
The puzzles and problem-solving section uses interactive puzzles to test your child’s ability to methodically work through a task in which the answer isn’t obvious. Their thinking will need to be flexible, and they will need to stay focused.
The creative comprehension section will comprise a number of different sources, such as a table, a coded message, a diary entry and a map, all linked to one theme. Your child will need to answer questions that assess their ability to make sense of the sources, and, in some cases, to make connections between sources.
