Introduction
Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital is an independent school in Clifton, Bristol. Founded in 1586 through the will of affluent merchant John Carr, the school gained its first Royal Charter in 1590.
The curriculum covers subjects in the following categories: Creative Arts, Humanities, Languages, Science, Maths, Sport and Technology.
Within the co-curricular programme, Seniors partake in Junior Drama, the Choir, Photography, Fencing, Gardening Club, Chess and Life Drawing, among others.
In line with the motto Whilst we have time, let us do good, QEH nurtures each pupil’s intellectual and spiritual independence whilst instilling in them a global perspective and an understanding that life is not just about themselves.

Open Events for Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 11 Plus (11+) Entry
Open Events take place throughout the year and include a meeting with the Head and current students, as well as tours of the extensive facilities. No prior notification is needed. Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Your son will be invited to sit entrance examinations in January of the calendar year of entry. He will also be asked to attend an interview with the Head and Head of Year to discuss his hobbies, interests and school work.
The interviews take place before the entrance examination, during the boy’s taster morning. A current school reference will also be requested.
The registration form can be accessed on this page. The fee of £50 is non-refundable. Please note that, on acceptance of place, a deposit is also payable.
Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships are granted at the sole discretion of the school. If he becomes a scholar, your son will be expected to work hard, to contribute positively to the school’s community and set a good example for other pupils.
The school awards academic, music and sports scholarships. They don’t carry any fee reduction but can be coupled with a bursary if you are in a need of support with paying the fees.
In addition to its own resources, financial support (bursaries) to those in need comes from the John James Foundation (a Bristol-based charity), the QEH Elizabethan Society and friends of the school. Bursaries are means-tested and cover up to 100% of the fees.
Applications for bursaries must be submitted prior to the January entrance exams. If you wish to apply, you should request an Application for Financial Assistance Form from the Admissions Office. Note that funds are limited, and that performance in the entrance exams is taken into account.
Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital 11+ exam consists of the following papers:
- Creative writing (30 minutes)
- Mathematics (30 minutes)
- Verbal Reasoning (45 minutes)
The English paper examines writing skills, including spelling and punctuation. Marks will be awarded for good use of imagination, creativity, form, purpose, organisation, cohesion and sentence structure.
The maths exam assesses your son’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The Verbal Reasoning paper is primarily designed to test and assess his logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
