Introduction

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) is an independent boys’ school in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. It was founded in 1591 by the Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth I, upon the request of Wakefield’s leading citizens.

Pupils study maths, English, science, ICT, humanities, PE, MFL and RS, and enjoy a variety of after-class activities, such as Archery, Animation, Go-Karting, Rowing, Comic Making and Mountain Biking. Besides an array of extra-curricular activities (around 100), the school also provides boys with opportunities to visit exciting destinations such as France, Morocco and Ecuador.

The school’s motto ‘It’s a disgrace to be ignorant’ and its impressive number of notable alumni, including Joseph Moxon, mathematician and hydrographer to King Charles II, and Richard Henry Lee, signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence, are in full alignment with QEGS’ strong academic ethos. Whilst maximising intellectual potential within the pupil-centred learning environment, the school also ensures that  boys adopt qualities such as tolerance, altruism and compassion, and thus meet its high standards of personal behaviour.

QEGS offers places on the basis of performance in the 11+ entrance examinations and interview with a member of the senior staff, as well as the quality of the references provided by your son’s current school. To register your child for the exams, you should complete and return an application form to the admissions team, along with the small application fee.

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Means-tested bursaries, also known as Foundation Awards, are offered to children from low-income families, enabling them to benefit from a QEGS education. Parents with a net income of less than £50,000 per annum, including investments, assets or equity in property, will be considered eligible.

Awards typically cover 25%-75% of fees, with two free places available each year for pupils entering Year 7. They are reviewed annually and may vary depending on your financial circumstances.
