Introduction
Established in 1574, Pate’s Grammar School is a co-educational school with academy status for pupils aged 11 to 18, based in Cheltenham.
Pate’s Grammar School follows the national curriculum, offering a broad and challenging syllabus designed to inspire academic excellence and enable pupils to reach their full potential. During their educational journey, students gain core knowledge in subjects such as maths, English, and science whilst also having the opportunity to learn languages including Mandarin, German, and French.
Alongside academic learning, the school places a strong emphasis on the development of creative and athletic pursuits. To that end, Pate’s Grammar School offers a number of extracurricular activities, including popular climbing, shooting, environment, British Sign Language, and Christian Union clubs. The school pauses regular classes every Tuesday afternoon to allow more time for participation in extracurriculars.
Whilst academic performance is highly valued, Pate’s Grammar School’s ethos centres on creating a caring and respectful community. Core values include empathy, mutual respect, and collaboration, and the school aims to foster an environment where students can develop their skills and feel valued and understood.

Pate’s Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
To be considered for one of the 150 Year 7 places at Pate’s Grammar School, prospective pupils must achieve the required standard in the 11 Plus exam. Pate’s school admissions are centrally-coordinated by Gloucestershire County Council and parents who wish their child to sit the 11+ test for the school must complete the Gloucestershire Grammar Test Registration Form via the school’s website when registration is open.
With an average of three applications for every place at Year 7 at Pate’s, in the event of oversubscription, the school will give priority to:
- Looked after children or previously looked after children
- Children entitled to Pupil Premium
- Other ‘qualified’ children, in test rank order, until 150 places are filled

How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to Pate’s Grammar School
Pate’s Grammar School uses the same 11 Plus test from GL Assessment as the other six grammar schools in Gloucestershire. For your child to be considered for a Year 7 place at Pate’s, you must complete a Common Application Form (CAF) online via your Local Authority (LA) and a test registration form, available via the school’s website during the registration period.
For your child to be considered for a place at Pate’s, you must include the school as one of your ranked choices on the CAF if they have reached the Qualifying Standard in the 11+ exam, otherwise, your child will not be considered for entry.
Parents will receive results from the 11 Plus as soon as possible after the exam and the LA will send out official place allocations in March of the following year.

Pate’s Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Pate’s Grammar School test consists of two multiple-choice papers that cover the following subjects:
- English Comprehension, Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning
- Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning (including Spatial Reasoning)
Both tests are taken on the same day and each session lasts about an hour.
How to Prepare for the Pate’s Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam?
To allay any concerns your child has about sitting the 11+ exam for Pate’s, work together on building a thorough revision timetable in the lead-up to the test. This timetable is the first step in giving your child the best possible chance of gaining a place at Pate’s. The qualifying standardised score ranges from year to year. If there are more pupils with qualifying scores than there are places available, applicants’ results will be valued in descending order and places will be allocated accordingly.
Pupils who are able to score 85%+ consistently in our 11+ practice tests should be on track to pass the Pate’s Grammar School 11+ test. Pate’s Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Practice Exam Papers
Since Pate’s is part of the Gloucestershire School Consortium, they use the shared Gloucestershire test for their 11+ Exam. This exam is created for Gloucestershire by the exam board GL Assessment. The resources below are specifically designed to match the GL Assessment format used by Gloucestershire Grammar Schools. They will therefore prove ideal for children currently preparing for the Pate’s Grammar School eleven plus exam.
