Oxford High School: 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam Information

Introduction

Oxford High School (OHS) is an independent day school for girls aged 4 to 18. It opened in 1875 and boasts an impressive list of alumnae, including the poet Elizabeth Jennings and the actress Dame Maggie Smith.

Students at OHS achieve superb results in public exams, enabling them to secure places at prestigious universities, with 89% of A-Level results in 2025 being in the A*-B range. Inspirational teaching also helps girls develop a lifelong love of learning and the ability to think critically.

The co-curricular programme at OHS is extensive, which means students receive a truly holistic education and go out into the world as confident young women. With over 100 clubs available each term, there really is something for everyone. Available activities include beekeeping, crochet and creative writing. 

Pastoral care is at the heart of school life. Each pupil is known as an individual and will see their form tutor every day. This means form tutors quickly identify any pupil in need of additional support and guidance. The school nurse and counsellors are also on hand to offer a listening ear.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Oxford High School

Oxford High School hosts open events, allowing prospective families to meet staff members, interact with current pupils and explore the facilities. Attending one of the events will help you decide whether OHS is the right school for your daughter. 

If you decide that your daughter would thrive at OHS, you should then fill out the online registration form by the November deadline, when your daughter is in Year 6. You will have to upload a photo of your daughter and pay a £120 registration fee (£180 if you are overseas). If you receive income support, the school will waive this fee.

In November of Year 6, less than two weeks after the registration deadline, your daughter will attend Admissions Day at OHS. She will sit an online assessment produced by Quest and complete a 30-minute English written paper. 

Please note that your daughter will also be interviewed by the head or a senior staff member within a few weeks of the Admissions Day, and a reference from her current school will be reviewed as part of the admissions process.

You will find out if your daughter has been offered a place in December. If she is offered a place and you want to accept it, you must do so in the Spring Term. Acceptance of an offer will include paying a £1,000 deposit, which will be refunded after your daughter has completed her education at OHS, minus any outstanding fees.

It is possible that your daughter may not receive an immediate offer but will be placed on a waiting list in ranked order. In this case, you will be contacted if a place becomes available for her. 

Oxford High School: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry

The following scholarships and exhibitions are available for Year 7 entry:

• Academic
• Art & Design/Textiles
• Drama
• Music
• Sport

You do not need to apply for an academic scholarship because they are awarded based on performance in the entrance exams and interviews.

If your daughter is offered a place at OHS, she will have the opportunity to apply for up to two of the other scholarships by the January deadline.

Scholarships are worth 5% of the annual fees, and exhibitions are worth £300 each year.  

Bursaries are means-tested awards offered to girls who perform well in the entrance exam and interview, whose families cannot afford the full fees. Only a limited number of bursaries are available, and you are unlikely to be eligible if you have an annual income over £87,500. You must indicate on the registration form if you intend to apply for a bursary.

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Oxford High School Year 7 Entrance Exam 

Here are our top tips to help the preparation process feel manageable, making it a positive experience:

• Start study sessions early so that you can take a calm, measured approach.
• Keep study sessions short so that your daughter can maintain her focus; the average 10-11-year-old can concentrate for around 20-30 minutes at a time.
• Revise key topics from the Year 5 national curriculum so that your daughter has a solid foundation of knowledge. 
• Encourage your daughter to read widely and regularly so that she broadens her vocabulary, improves her reading comprehension and sparks her imagination.
• Engage in discussions with your daughter so that she learns to think critically and can express her views eloquently.
• Play games and complete puzzles with your daughter that will enhance her problem-solving skills, such as chess and draughts.
• Promote a growth mindset, which is the belief that we can all improve our skills if we put the time and effort in. Mistakes are an opportunity to learn, and every achievement, no matter how small, should be celebrated.
• Use practice tests so that your daughter becomes familiar with what to expect on Admissions Day, removing any fear of the unknown. Our practice tests closely mirror Oxford High School’s Year 7 entrance exam, enabling your daughter to become accustomed to the format, question types and timings. As she works her way through the tests, she will become adept at answering questions quickly and accurately, learning from any errors she makes along the way.
