Introduction

Oldham Hulme Grammar School is an independent school in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Founded in the 19th century under the Endowed Schools Act 1869, Oldham Hulme follows the ‘diamond model’.

The curriculum comprises English, mathematics, science, computer science, PSHE, geography, history, religious studies, art, technology, music, physical education, Latin and Modern Foreign Languages.

The extra-curricular activities include Clubs and Societies such as the Quiz League, Chemistry and Geography clubs and the annual senior school MasterChef competition, whilst educational trips and visits have included a CCF Expedition to North East Lapland in Arctic Sweden, visits to the sister school in Ghana, a Classics trip to Italy and visits to Barcelona and Berlin.

The school has undergone many refurbishments since it was originally founded with the aim of providing a high quality modern education to its students. Oldham Hulme Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

To enter Oldham Hulme Grammar School in Year 7, your child must take the entrance examination in January of the calendar year of entry. Please note that, prior to this, they should be registered for a place at the school. 

Following successful performance in the exam, your child will be invited to attend an interview in February. The selection process takes into account their current school report and any special circumstances (eg. recent changes in health or school).

Oldham Hulme Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Academic scholarships are available to candidates who perform successfully in the entrance exam. The top four pupils will receive a £4,000 scholarship, positions 5-7 will receive a £2,000 award and positions 8-10 will receive a £1,000 award. Scholarships will last for the duration of Years 7-11 and are awarded regardless of parental income.

Means-tested financial support for the payment of school fees (bursary) is also available in Year 7. Bursaries cover up to 100% of the tuition fees depending on the academic performance of the pupil and the financial, compassionate or other pertinent circumstances of the parents.

The Oldham Hulme Grammar School entrance assessment consists of the following papers:

  • English
  • Mathematics 
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning


The English paper examines both comprehension and writing skills, including inference, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.

The maths exam tests pupils’ problem-solving and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning test measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, assessing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
