The results of the Medway Test serve as a unified standard for making admission decisions across the grammar schools in the area. Medway Grammar Schools 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Year 7 places for Medway grammar schools are determined by pupil performance in the Medway Test.

Prior to applying for a place, prospective families are advised to attend their preferred schools’ Open Day to get more information about the admissions process. Guided tours of facilities are included in the event programme, allowing you and your child to become familiar with everything on offer. 

The Medway Test is designed to identify the top 23% of pupils in the year group who apply for a grammar school place. Please note that your child must sit the examinations in a Medway Council test venue in Medway, and that the test cannot be taken remotely.

How to Register for the Medway Grammar Schools 11 Plus (11+) Exam

To apply for a Year 7 place at any of the Medway grammar schools on behalf of your child, you must complete the online form that’s available on the website of the Medway local authority. 

Applications to Rainham Mark Grammar School and The Rochester Grammar School should also include the completion of a Supplementary Information Form (SIF), where you should enter details that help these schools use their oversubscription criteria correctly when allocating places.

Medway Grammar Schools 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The Medway Test consists of the following assessments:

Paper 1: English

The English paper assesses a number of skills, including comprehension and vocabulary.

Paper 2: Mathematics

Mathematics questions assess students’ mathematical skills, problem-solving abilities and logical reasoning.

Paper 3: Reasoning

In this section, Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR), Spatial Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning could be assessed. NVR questions test students’ ability to solve problems using visual and abstract reasoning. Spatial Reasoning tests spatial awareness, mental rotation, visualisation and problem-solving skills. The Verbal Reasoning sections will evaluate your child’s ability to discern rules and relationships between words and letters, as well as their ability to think critically and analyse information.

All papers are produced by GL Assessment and are designed to assess and select the top 23% of the cohort each year.

Medway 11 Plus (11+) Exam Pass Marks and Target Scores

The recent standardised pass mark for pupils sitting the Medway 11+ Selection Test was 488. Historical data suggests that this standardised score correlates to a score of roughly 80%+ in our Medway practice tests.

Whilst there are no guarantees, consistently scoring 80%+ in our practice tests is a fairly strong indicator that your child should do well in the Medway 11+ exam.

Passing the test does not guarantee that your child will be offered a place. It simply means they have surpassed the required threshold. As such, it makes sense to aim for as high a score as possible.

Don’t worry if your child is not scoring well in our practice papers from the outset. With targeted practice and focus, it’s possible to make big improvements in a short amount of time!
