Introduction

Ewell Castle School is a co-educational independent school that educates pupils from age 4 to 18. It was founded in 1926 and is situated in Ewell, a charming village in Surrey. The school is steeped in history, with the Senior School campus once forming part of the grounds of Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace and the Prep School building dating back to 1838.

The academic curriculum at Ewell Castle School is broad, designed to equip pupils with all the skills they will need for life as adults in the 21st century. Subjects in the Senior School include the core ones, as well as business, computer science and drama, to name but a few. 

Ewell Castle School offers pupils a wide range of co-curricular activities, with more than 56 activities, clubs and academic clinics available each term. Additionally, there are plenty of trips arranged, such as a Year 7-10 skiing trip and a Year 9 history trip to the Somme, enabling pupils to be stretched and challenged outside of the classroom while creating memorable experiences.

The wellbeing of pupils is taken very seriously at Ewell Castle School, with all staff recognising that children need to feel happy, safe and secure to achieve their full potential and thrive. In the Senior School, all students have a form tutor who will monitor their progress and address any concerns as they arise. A counsellor is also available to provide a listening ear to those who need it.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Ewell Castle School

Ewell Castle School warmly invites you to attend an open event or arrange a personal tour to view the facilities and meet staff and current pupils, giving you a taste of what life at the school is like. You can book a place for an open event here or contact the admissions team to arrange a personal tour.    

The next step is to fill out the online application form and pay the non-refundable £180 registration fee before the October half-term, when your child is in Year 6. Please note that if you are going to apply for a bursary, the deadline is a week earlier. 

Your child will then attend the school’s Assessments and Scholarship Day in November. 

Offers will be made via email in December. If your child is offered a place and you wish to accept it, you will be required to pay a £1,500 deposit. This deposit is refunded when your child has completed their education at Ewell Castle School.

Ewell Castle School: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry

The following scholarships are available for Year 7 entry:

• Academic

• Art
• Dance
• Design and Technology
• Drama
• Music
• Sport

You do not need to apply for an academic scholarship because they are awarded based on performance in the entrance assessments. 

The other scholarships must be applied for before the October half-term of Year 6.

Scholarships awarded in Year 7 will continue until the end of Year 11 and are worth a 15-25% reduction in school fees. Those who do not quite reach the scholarship standard may be offered an exhibition instead, which recognises potential. Exhibitions carry a 5-10% fee reduction.

Ewell Castle School also offers bursaries, which are means-tested awards. They can top up scholarship fee remissions, but the overall fee remission will be below 50%.

Your child will need to reach the required standard in the entrance assessments to be eligible for a bursary, and you will need to provide evidence of your financial circumstances that shows you cannot afford the full fees. Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Ewell Castle School Year 7 Entrance Exam

Here are some of our top tips, helping your child to build their confidence and develop their abilities:

• Teach your child to have a growth mindset, which is the belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through hard work, commitment and a willingness to learn from mistakes. See setbacks as temporary and challenges as an opportunity to grow.
• Embrace a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious food, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, as this will enhance your child’s cognitive functions and overall wellbeing.
• Schedule short but regular study sessions because the average 10-11-year-old can focus effectively for around 20-30 minutes at a time and needs breaks to recharge and assimilate the information they have learnt.
• Encourage your child to read every day because this will widen their vocabulary and improve their reading comprehension, as well as ignite their imagination, which is crucial for the creative writing task. 
• Play games and puzzles that will help develop their skills while they are having fun. For example, crosswords are great for building vocabulary, spelling and inference skills, and sudoku strengthens numerical thinking and logical reasoning. 
• Improve creative writing skills by giving your child short, manageable tasks inspired by a picture, an unusual object or even a starter sentence. Encourage them to think about their ideas first, use clear descriptions and choose vocabulary that brings their writing to life. Afterwards, talk together about what they did well and suggest one small improvement for next time. We have resources available to support this. 
• Use our online Quest practice tests so that your child knows what to expect in the online assessment. Familiarity with the types of questions they will face, the format and the timings will stop them worrying about what the test will be like. As they work through our tests, they will be able to address any knowledge gaps and weak areas until they feel fully prepared and able to tackle any question that comes up on the day.
