Introduction
Dame Allan’s School is a collection of Independent schools in Fenham, in the west end of Newcastle. The group consists of a Junior School, Senior Schools and a Sixth Form. The original schools are two of the oldest in the city.
Founded in 1705 as a charity by Dame Eleanor Allan, the schools operated as separate boys’ and girls’ schools with a joint governing body until 1988, when the governors decided to appoint a principal with overall responsibility for the management of the two schools.
Over three hundred years after its foundation, Dame Allan’s is noted for its strong tradition of innovation in education. It is the only school in Newcastle to follow the pioneering Diamond Structure, offering a co-educational Junior School, single-sex Senior Schools and a co-educational Sixth Form.
A genuinely caring and supportive pastoral environment helps the Senior girls feel happy and confident in their school environment. The Head of Lower School supported by the Assistant Head guides all the girls in Years 7-9 with a dedicated open-door approach, offering full and personalised support.
Boys are also welcomed into a supportive pastoral environment. Both boys and girls are under the care of experienced teachers in classes of no more than 24 pupils, which ensures that they are treated as individuals and are educated on the basis of their individual learning style.
In 2016, the Girl’s School was named the best performing girls’ school in the North East and ended up in the top 30 in the country with 77.8% of papers sat by the girls graded A or A* in the GCSE examinations.
In 2018, over 20% of all of the new style 9-1 GCSE papers sat by the boys achieved the highest grade 9 result, more than four times the national average.
The curriculum for both girls and boys includes maths, English, sciences (chemistry, physics and biology), alongside two foreign languages, computing and D&T.
