The Crossley Heath School: Entry Procedure for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7

Written by Louise Lang

Introduction

The Crossley Heath School is a co-educational grammar school for pupils aged 11-18. It is located in Halifax and is a member of the Northern Grammar Schools Alliance, established to enable selective schools across a large geographical area to share their expertise.

Crossley Heath has high academic standards of which it is rightly proud. In 2024, nearly half of all GCSE grades were 8 or 9, and 51% of A Levels were in the A*-B range, with pupils securing places at sought-after universities, such as Cambridge, Nottingham and Sheffield. The results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils and staff.

The extra-curricular programme at Crossley Heath is broad, meaning there is something for everyone. Available clubs include Debating Club, Art Club and Music Club. Pupils can get involved to develop their talents, learn new skills, make friends and have fun. There is even a Student Leadership Programme, enabling students to take an active role in making positive changes that benefit the school community.

The wellbeing of pupils is a priority at Crossley Heath. The Wellbeing Team works hard to look after the mental health of all students and was pleased to receive an award in recognition of the high standard of pastoral care provided to pupils.

The Crossley Heath School: Admissions Process for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry

Crossley Heath and North Halifax Grammar School share a registration and admissions process, meaning you can go to either school website to register your child for the admissions test. The registration window will open in March when your child is in Year 5.

In June of Year 5, Crossley Heath will hold an Open Evening, giving you and your child the opportunity to find out more about the school and get a feel for it. The registration window for the admissions test closes shortly after the Open Evening. It is worth putting a reminder on your calendar to avoid missing the Open Evening and registration deadline.

In September of Year 6, you will receive all the information you need regarding the location and date of your child’s admissions test (it will be at Crossley Heath or North Halifax Grammar School and will take place on a Saturday towards the end of September or at the start of October).

The admissions test will comprise the following:

  • Paper 1: English and Maths questions with Multiple Choice Answer options
  • Paper 2: English and Maths questions where you respond with Short Written Answers
  • Paper 3: a Creativity question which will require a written Creative Response.

Your child’s creative response paper will only be marked if they reach the necessary score in the English and maths papers.

In October of Year 6, you will find out if your child has reached the required standard in the admissions test. If they have, it does not mean they will definitely be offered a place, as it is likely that more children will reach the required standard than there are places available. However, they will be invited to an Open Morning.

By the end of October of Year 6, you must complete the Common Application Form (CAF) on your local authority’s website. If your child did not reach the required standard in the admissions test, you should not list Crossley Heath as one of your chosen schools. If they did, and you want your child to attend Crossley Heath, you should make it your first choice.

At the beginning of March of Year 6, you will find out from your local authority whether your child has been offered a place at Crossley Heath.

Oversubscription Criteria

If there are more candidates with an eligible score than places available, the oversubscription criteria will be applied. The following candidates will be given priority:

  1. Looked after or previously looked after children.
  2. Children who are eligible for Pupil Premium or Service Premium.
  3. Up to 10% of places will be awarded to children living in the catchment area.
  4. The remaining places will be given to the children with the highest combined scores from the maths and English components of the admissions test.

The Crossley Heath School: School Details and Year 7 Entrance Exam Information

Address: Savile Park, Halifax, HX3 0HG

County: West Yorkshire

Admissions info: admin@crossleyheath.org.uk or 01422 360272

School type: Co-educational grammar school

Exam date: September 2026

Exam board: FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise)

Your child will sit the following papers:

  • Paper 1: English and Maths questions with Multiple Choice Answer options
  • Paper 2: English and Maths questions where you respond with Short Written Answers
  • Paper 3: a Creativity question which will require a written Creative Response.

The questions will not go beyond the Year 5 curriculum, meaning your child will have been taught everything they need to know. Scores are age-weighted, so do not worry if your child is one of the younger candidates. Once the English and maths scores have been standardised, Crossley Heath and North Halifax Grammar School will agree on a qualifying mark. All candidates who reach the qualifying mark in English and maths will then have their creative response marked. Those who then get the required standard in the creative writing paper will be eligible for a place at Crossley Heath. If there are more eligible candidates than places available (180), as already mentioned, the oversubscription criteria will be applied.

English questions will cover reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. For the comprehension, your child will need to read a passage, which could be fiction or non-fiction, and then answer questions that will evaluate their understanding of the passage. For the vocabulary questions, your child’s knowledge of the meanings of words will be tested. They might be given a word and then have to find the synonym of that word from five options. The spelling questions will require your child to fill in the missing letters of a word that appears in a sentence.

Maths questions will be on topics your child has covered in Year 5. These topics are:

  • Number and place value
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions (including decimals and percentages)
  • Measurement
  • Geometry: properties of shapes
  • Geometry: position and direction
  • Statistics

The creativity question will involve your child producing a creative written response to a prompt, which will provide an opportunity for them to demonstrate their creative thinking and problem solving skills. In addition, their response should show that they can use a variety of sentence structures, organise their work appropriately and use a wide vocabulary. The standard of their spelling, punctuation and grammar will be important.

We understand that entrance exams can feel daunting. However, there is plenty your child can do to ensure they perform to the best of their ability on the day.

Preparing for the Crossley Heath Year 7 Entrance Exam

Please encourage your child to do the following so that they can excel in the 11 plus exam for Crossley Heath:

  • Focus at school: The entrance exam will test what your child has learnt in school up the end of Year 5. If they focus in their lessons, complete any homework they are given and ask their teacher to go over anything they have not understood, they will be in a strong position to do well in the exam.
  • Revise: Scheduling regular study sessions to revise Year 5 topics is crucial. It will cement your child’s knowledge and allow them to allocate additional time to challenging areas. Keep sessions short (around 30 minutes is ideal) so they can maintain their concentration.
  • Develop a growth mindset: This is the belief that we can all improve our skills if we are prepared to put in the time and effort. Encourage your child to have this can-do attitude.
  • Eat healthily, sleep well and exercise: This will help promote wellbeing and optimise brain function.
  • Read widely: Encouraging your child to read a diverse range of books will help fire their imagination and develop their vocabulary. This will prove helpful in the English and creative writing papers. Plus, reading is a great way to relax.
  • Use practice tests: We have produced practice tests, after careful research, that will familiarise your child with what to expect in Crossley Heath’s 11 plus exam. Working through the practice tests will remove any fear of the unknown, leading to a stronger performance on the day.
