Introduction

Although Freemen’s School is owned by the City of London Corporation, it is located in Ashtead Park in the Surrey Hills. The original school was founded in Brixton in 1854 to provide care and education for orphaned children of Freemen of the City (men and women who had the right to carry out their trade or craft within the Square Mile). It moved out of the city to its current home in 1926.

Since then, the site has been expanded considerably and many new facilities have been added. The most recent development work includes a purpose-built boarding house, a new music school and an award-winning swimming pool.

The school has been fully co-educational since its very beginnings over 160 years ago. A majority of the girls and boys, aged 7 to 18 years, are day students, with just under 10% boarding. 11+ entrance to the school is competitive, with around 150 applicants competing for just 20 places each year.

City of London Freemen’s School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Freemen’s School is academically selective. However, they state that they are looking for ‘well-rounded pupils with a genuine interest in education in the broadest sense of the word’.  The school’s admissions process supports this, combining competitive entrance exams with interviews designed to find out about candidates’ character and interests.

If you wish your child to be considered for a Year 7 place at Freemen’s School, you must complete a registration form and pay a non-refundable registration fee of £200. The deadline for registration is in October in the year prior to entry.

All candidates take paper-based exams in November of Year 6. A confidential report from your child’s current school will also be requested, testifying to their academic ability and other interests and aptitudes, as well as attitude and behaviour.

Letters about the school’s decision are sent out in December and acceptances must be made by the deadline in March. Please note that a £2,000 deposit is payable on acceptance of a place.

City of London Freemen’s School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of separate assessments, taking place in November. They are valued at 5% of fees. Music Scholarships and Exhibitions are also available. These are awarded on the basis of performance in an audition and interview. Applicants must perform at a Grade 3 standard in order to be considered.

Means-tested bursaries are offered to families in financial need. They are reviewed annually and may vary in value, depending on changes in your financial circumstances. The application deadline is usually set in October of the year preceding entry. Please click here to learn more.

The maths exam assesses your child’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. The paper will include questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
