Introduction

Chesham Grammar School is a co-educational grammar school for pupils between the ages of 11 and 18, located in White Hill, Chesham, Buckinghamshire. The school was founded in 1947 and currently holds Academy, Specialist, and Humanities College status.

Chesham Grammar School follows the national curriculum designed to provide a balanced and expansive education for its pupils. The school puts great emphasis on preparing pupils for a rapidly changing world, which is why it maintains a balance between classical academic subjects and creative pursuits. 

The pupils at Chesham Grammar School have the opportunity to explore various interests and hobbies by participating in many different clubs. Some of the clubs offered by the school include a film club where pupils can practise and discuss filmmaking, a music club with various choirs, a video game club, a computer programming club, etc.

When it comes to the school’s ethos, Chesham Grammar School places the values of kindness, aspiration, and respect at its core. Its vision is that every student who attends Chesham Grammar comes out at the end of the educational journey as someone well-prepared for life and its various challenges.

Chesham Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Admissions of students in Year 7 are determined by their performance in the 11 Plus Secondary Transfer Test (STT), which aims to select candidates for entry based on their academic ability.

Chesham Grammar School is part of the Buckinghamshire Coordinated Admissions Scheme and follows their process for Year 7 admissions. Their exam provider is GL Assessment. 

Competition for Year 7 places at Chesham Grammar School is high. In cases where there are more successful applicants than available places, the school uses the following oversubscription criteria, giving priority to:

• Looked After or previously Looked After Children
• Students who live within the school’s catchment area and are eligible for Free School Meals
• Pupils who have a sibling attending Chesham Grammar
• Children of staff at Chesham Grammar
• Children who live in the school’s catchment area
• Students who have exceptional medical or social needs that can only be met by the school
• Children who live closest to the school

Chesham Grammar School also operates a waiting list. Pupils who are added to the waiting list are ranked again in accordance with the school’s oversubscription criteria.

If your child doesn’t meet the exam’s score criterion because of exceptional circumstances, you can request a Selection Review. This review involves a panel selected by the Local Authority evaluating each situation independently.

How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to Chesham Grammar School

Registration for the STT is automatic for pupils attending state funded Buckinghamshire primary schools.

However, if your child does not attend a state funded Buckinghamshire primary school, registration via the Buckinghamshire County Council website is essential, with applications closing in June.

You should also submit a CAF form before the end of October to your Local Authority, listing on it your child’s preferred schools for entry. Secondary Transfer Test results are received within the same month, and school place allocations are finalised in March.
