Cheltenham Ladies’ College: Entry Procedure for 11 Plus/Year 7 (LC1)

Introduction

 

Cheltenham Ladies’ College (CLC) is an independent day and boarding school for girls. The school is divided into the Lower College (Years 7-9), Upper College (Years 10-11) and Sixth Form. CLC has a diverse community that welcomes girls of all faiths from a wide range of backgrounds. There are many reasons to consider the establishment for your daughter.

 

Teaching at CLC is first class. Teachers are passionate about their subjects, inspiring girls to work hard and actively engage in the learning process. Unsurprisingly, thanks to dedicated teachers and motivated girls, CLC consistently produces superb results in public exams. In 2024, 85.7% of GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range, and 91.1% of A-Level grades were in the A*-B range. If your daughter secures a place at CLC, you can be confident she will reach her full academic potential.

 

Life outside of the classroom is vibrant. Girls can choose from over 150 co-curricular activities, meaning there really is something for everyone. All girls are encouraged to get involved and have fun. Charitable activities also feature strongly at CLC, as the school is committed to helping make the world a better place. Your daughter might, for example, help at a Food Bank or perform music for older members of the local area.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Cheltenham Ladies’ College

 

Visiting CLC is the best way to start the admissions process. CLC recommends you attend an Open Day if you have not been to the school before. A private visit is also possible, with priority given to registered girls in Year 5 or 6. 

 

Once you decide CLC is a good fit for your daughter, you should complete the registration form and pay the registration fee. The school recommends you do this as soon as possible. The deadline is the beginning of July of Year 5. Please note that if you are applying for a bursary, you should complete a bursary registration form instead.

 

You will also need to fill out an entrance exam form. This must be done within a month of the registration deadline, i.e. by the start of August before your daughter starts Year 6. CLC will send you the form.

 

In October of Year 6, your daughter will attend an Assessment Day. She will sit an online exam that covers maths, problem solving and verbal reasoning. She will also complete a written English comprehension and analysis of a closed text. Additionally, there will be group interviews and activities. 

 

A reference from your daughter’s current head will also be reviewed as part of the process.

 

Offers are made in November of Year 6. If your daughter is offered a place and you want to accept it, you must do so by the deadline at the beginning of March of Year 6. You must also pay an acceptance fee and deposit.

 

 

Cheltenham Ladies’ College: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7/LC1 Entry

 

Are Any Scholarships Available for Year 7 Entry?

 

Academic and music scholarships are available for 11+/LC1 entry. 

 

You do not need to apply for an academic scholarship. If your daughter excels in the entrance assessments, she will be invited to further assessments and interviews that will take place in February of Year 6.

 

If you want to apply for a music scholarship for your daughter, you will need to fill out the relevant form by the start of October of Year 6. Auditions will then be held in February of Year 6. 

 

Scholarships do not carry a fee remission. 

 

Are Any Bursaries Available for Year 7 Entry?

 

Bursaries (known as Beale Awards at CLC) are available to pupils joining Year 7/LC1. Beale Awards are means-tested awards worth up to 100% of the school’s fees.

Cheltenham Ladies’ College: Quest Online Assessment for Year 7/LC1 Entry and Written English Tests

 

What Does the Year 7 Cheltenham Ladies’ College Online Entrance Test Comprise?

 

The Quest online assessment applicants will take for Year 7 (11+) entry comprises the following:

 

• Maths section
• Problem-solving section
• Verbal reasoning section

 

The maths section will cover what your daughter has been taught in her maths lessons, i.e. maths topics from the Key Stage 2 national curriculum, including place value, BODMAS, symmetry, coordinates and probability.

 

The problem-solving questions will test your daughter’s reasoning skills using interactive puzzles. She will need to demonstrate resilience to reach the answers.

 

The verbal reasoning section will evaluate your daughter’s ability to reason logically using words and sentences. She might need to, amongst other things, spot words within words, crack codes and work out the patterns in sequences. 

 

What Do the Written English Assessments Involve?

 

Your daughter will need to complete an English comprehension and a closed text analysis.

 

The English comprehension will require your daughter to be able to read and understand a given passage. She must demonstrate that she can make inferences and deductions.

 

The closed text analysis involves exploring the meaning of a written passage by carefully examining language, structure and themes.

 

What Is the Purpose of the Group Interviews and Activities?

 

This part of the Assessment Day will enable CLC to get to know your daughter better. Staff will see how well your daughter can communicate and listen. She will participate in discussions and drama activities and need to show that she is willing to get involved and give things a go.

Tips To Help Your Child Prepare for Cheltenham Ladies’ College 11+/LC1 Assessment Day

 

• Encourage your daughter to read widely. This will help develop her word recognition and language comprehension, as well as enhance her creative skills and concentration levels.
• Talk to your daughter about current events so she engages with the world around her. Also, ask her opinion about topical issues so she develops her ability to form opinions and can offer arguments to support them. This could prove invaluable for the group activities and interviews and will benefit her enormously in life.
• Remind her how crucial it is to apply herself in her lessons at school and to ask her teacher to go over anything she doesn’t understand.    
• Ensure your daughter eats healthily, gets plenty of sleep and has plenty of time to relax. This will help her maintain good mental health.
• Keep study sessions short. Studying little and often is better than occasionally having long study periods. Children aged 10-11 can typically only focus for around 30 minutes, so short sessions are more effective.
• Praise your daughter to help keep her motivated. Notice each achievement, no matter how small, helping her see that small steps over time make a big difference.
• Use targeted resources and practice papers. Familiarity with what to expect in the entrance exams will help your daughter perform to the best of her ability on the day.
