Introduction

 

Brighton Girls is an independent day school for girls located in the city of Brighton and Hove, East Sussex. Founded in 1876, the school is a member of the GDST (Girls’ Day School Trust), the largest group of independent schools in the UK.

Open Days are held throughout the year on weekdays and Saturdays, offering families the chance to meet staff members and current pupils and tour the extensive facilities.

Brighton Girls 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

 

The first step of the admissions process involves registration. You should complete and submit the online application form so that your daughter can be invited to taster events and considered for the entrance examinations. A copy of her birth certificate and passport should also be provided. 

 

The assessment day for Year 7 entry, including written papers, takes place in December of the year preceding entry. Prior to the exams, your daughter will attend an interview with a senior staff member. Places are offered in early February, to be accepted by the deadline in early March.

 

Brighton Girls 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries

 

Top-performing candidates in the entrance exams will be automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship. The school also offers Temple Scholarships, recognising achievement and enthusiasm in the areas of art, drama, dance, sport, music or other activity. Bursaries are awarded to girls coming from low-income families. They are reviewed annually and take into account changes in your income and circumstances. Your daughter’s academic performance in the entrance examinations is one of the key factors when determining whether or not she will be awarded a bursary.

 

Higher-value bursaries are typically awarded to families with a total income of less than £37,500 per year who have no capital assets other than their home. If your annual income is greater than £87,500, it is highly unlikely that your child will be awarded a bursary.

 

Brighton Girls 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

 

The Brighton Girls 11+ entrance examination consists of the following:

 

• English
• Mathematics
• Verbal Reasoning
• Non-Verbal Reasoning

 

The English section will assess your daughter’s ability to answer questions on a given passage, which could be fiction or non-fiction. She may also need to answer questions testing the standard of their spelling, punctuation and grammar.

 

The maths section will not go beyond the Year 5 maths curriculum. Topics covered could be arithmetic, geometry, measurement, numbers and statistics. Questions will evaluate your daughter’s mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, as well as their ability to work through multi-step questions.

 

The Verbal Reasoning module is primarily designed to test and assess her logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.

 

The Non-Verbal Reasoning module measures her ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
