Introduction

Established in 1555, Boston Grammar School (BGS) is a selective grammar school for boys aged 11-18 that admits girls into its Sixth Form. Located in Boston, Lincolnshire, it became a selective academy in 2013.

Boston Grammar operates a house system, whereby pupils are placed into one of four houses to encourage loyalty, competition and pastoral care. The four houses are all named after important figures in the school’s history: Muston, Laughton, Gannock and Parry. [1]

Broad and comprehensive, Boston Grammar’s curriculum actively prepares students for their future endeavours. Everything from MFL, science and psychology to business studies, DT and art is on offer, supported by vigorous, interactive lessons that inspire a love of learning.

The clubs programme allows boys to engage in non-academic development across a wide range of areas. Sketching Club, DofE, music theory, robotics, basketball and badminton are just some of the most popular features, underpinning an educational experience that’s both memorable and relevant. [2]

Recent GCSE results further underscore Boston Grammar’s robust academic standing. Notably, 65.7% of pupils managed to secure Grade 5 or above in English and Mathematics. Furthermore, an impressive 100% of leavers proceeded to either continue their education or secure employment. [3]

Boston Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Admission to the school is determined by pupil performance in the 11 Plus exam. Students normally take the tests at their current primary schools, although arrangements can be made for them to sit the exam at BGS.

Pupils who meet the required standards in the 11 Plus will be offered a place in Year 7, subject to availability. It’s important to note that good performance in the exam does not necessarily guarantee a place at the school.

In cases where there are more successful applicants than places available, the school uses its over-subscription criteria to decide which students will be accepted. In such cases, it will prioritise:

  • Looked After and previously Looked After children
  • Pupils whose sibling already attends the school
  • Pupils who live closer to the school.

More details about the oversubscription criteria are available in BGS’ admissions policy. You can view the school’s exact location on the map below:

How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to Boston Grammar School

Registrations for Year 7 places at Boston Grammar are done by completing the school’s online form, available on their website.

Please note that you will also be asked to complete a preference form (CAF) by the October deadline. In it, you will be asked to indicate your child’s preferred schools for entry. The CAF should be submitted to the LA, via their website.

Is Boston Grammar School part of a Consortium?

Boston Grammar School is part of the Lincolnshire 11+ Consortium, a group of schools that use the same entrance exam format and share a very similar admissions process.

Does Boston Grammar School have a catchment area?

Boston Grammar School doesn’t have a formally defined catchment area. However, as part of its oversubscription criteria, it will prioritise children who live closer to the school.

Boston Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The 11 Plus Exam at Boston Grammar School consists of two tests:

⦿ Verbal Reasoning

These sections test your child’s reasoning skills using language-based tasks, such as identifying patterns, completing analogies, solving codes and making logical deductions. They also measure your child’s ability to think critically and analyse information.

⦿ Non-Verbal Reasoning/Spatial Reasoning

The Lincolnshire 11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) sections test students’ ability to solve problems using visual and abstract reasoning. They do not rely on language skills but instead challenge students to identify patterns, relationships and sequences within shapes, figures and diagrams.

The Spatial Reasoning sections in the Lincolnshire 11 Plus Exam are designed to assess students’ ability to understand and manipulate visual representations of objects and space. Spatial Reasoning tests mental rotation, visualisation and problem-solving skills.

In order to select the top 25% of pupils, test scores are ranked in order and age-standardised.
