Introduction
Bexley Grammar School, founded in 1955, is a co-educational grammar school located in Welling, within the London Borough of Bexley. The school was inaugurated by Sir Edward Heath, who served as a Member of Parliament during that period. Bexley previously held foundation school status before transitioning to an academy in 2011.
Starting in 2017, the establishment introduced the International Baccalaureate (IB) as a substitute for A Levels in Sixth Form. Students enrolled at the school are assigned to one of six ‘houses,’ each comprising approximately 12 staff members.
The curriculum is ambitious, maintaining a broad scope while promoting in-depth inquiry. It’s well-rounded and tailored to suit students’ requirements, capabilities, and goals. Bexley takes pride in nurturing outstanding relationships between students and teachers.
Equal opportunities to access the curriculum are given to all students at every key stage. The curriculum advances from Year 7, through GCSE (where all students pursue the Ebacc), to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in the Sixth Form. Apart from academics, the school provides a variety of extracurricular activities to enhance students’ overall experience. Examples include the Robotics, Engineering, STEM, and Latin clubs.
Bexley’s ethos creates an educational environment that empowers students with the confidence to achieve their aspirations in life. The desire is for all learners to realise their complete academic potential, aligned with the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile and the guiding principles encapsulated by the words: Intellect, Empathy, and Courage.
Bexley boasts an impressive history of academic accomplishments, regularly yielding outstanding exam outcomes. The school’s successful implementation of the IB Programme has bolstered its standing as an institution renowned for academic prowess, with numerous students attaining remarkable scores in the IB Diploma.

Bexley Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Admission to Bexley Grammar School is selective, following the results of the Bexley Selection Tests, which take place in September. Bexley Grammar School is part of the Bexley Co-ordinated Secondary School Admission Scheme and parents who wish to put their child forward for the tests should visit the local authority website.
In order to be eligible for a place at the school, students need to achieve the required score in the selection tests, which are age standardised. Once the scores from the tests are in, they are then considered by a selection panel in order to determine which pupils are ‘deemed selective’.
Allocation decisions are based on the test results, although the Headteacher from the pupil’s primary school can request a review of the results if they feel something has been overlooked. In the case of over-subscription to the school, the following criteria are used:
- Looked After Children and Previously Looked After Children
- Students who achieved one of the highest 180 scores in the entrance tests
- Children with a sibling attending the school at the time of the application
- Children of staff employed at the school
- Children who live closer to the school.
The results of the selection tests will be disclosed in October. By March, the local authority will provide information about the specific school allocated to your child.
You can view the school’s exact location on the map below:

Bexley Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Bexley Grammar School 11+ exam consists of two multiple-choice papers, each lasting approximately 50 minutes.
⇒ Test 1: Verbal Skills – Comprehension, Technical English & SPAG, Verbal Reasoning
Consists of two sections ➤ The paper begins with a reading passage, followed by a series of comprehension questions. Then there are questions that test two of the following three topics: Spelling, Punctuation and Sentence Completion. A subsequent Verbal Reasoning section evaluates your child’s ability to discern rules and relationships between words and letters.
⇒ Test 2: Mathematics & Non-Verbal Reasoning (with elements of Spatial Reasoning)
Consists of two sections ➤ Section 1 covers Mathematics questions that assess students’ mathematical skills, problem-solving abilities and logical reasoning. Section 2 is broken down into multiple timed subsections that assess Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Spatial Reasoning. NVR questions test students’ ability to solve problems using visual and abstract reasoning. Spatial Reasoning tests spatial awareness, mental rotation, visualisation and problem-solving skills.
The exam is produced by GL Assessment. All questions are multiple-choice and answers should be marked in the specially provided answer booklet. Most questions will require one correct answer to be selected. Some Verbal Reasoning questions may require two answer choices to be selected. Rough paper will not be provided but your child can write on the question booklet to help them work out the answers. These workings are neither submitted nor marked.
Students will be given a separate age-standardised score for each of the three subject areas:
- Verbal Ability – Comprehension, Technical English and VR
- Numerical Ability – Mathematics
- Non-Verbal Ability – NVR and Spatial Reasoning
One total age-standardised score will then be used to decide whether your child is eligible for entry. The total score is weighted, by combining 50% of the Verbal Ability score, 25% of the Numerical Ability score and 25% of the Non-Verbal Ability score.
