Introduction

Aylesbury Grammar School, located in Buckinghamshire, was established in 1598, first as a co-educational and now as an all-boy-grammar school. It has approximately 1260 students and a house system that consists of 6 houses: Denson, Hampden, Lee, Paterson, Philips, and Ridley.

The school offers a comprehensive curriculum, which includes core subjects, humanities, and arts. To motivate its pupils to give their best, the school uses an internal awards system at the end of each term, where students can earn Colours, Honours, or Learning Honours. This system acknowledges the boys’ efforts and inspires them to strive for excellence.

Aylesbury Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Admission to Year 7 at Aylesbury Grammar School is determined by student performance in the 11 Plus Secondary Transfer Test (STT), which aims to select candidates for entry on the basis of academic ability.

Children can prepare for the exam by completing a Familiarisation booklet (this will be sent by post to children who attend state funded Buckinghamshire primary schools and can be downloaded for other children) and by taking a Practice Test prior to the date of the actual assessment. 

The Bucks 11 Plus Secondary Transfer Test is created by GL Assessment and administered by Buckinghamshire County Council as part of its Coordinated Admissions Scheme. 

If your child doesn’t achieve the required score in the exam due to exceptional circumstances, you may apply for a Selection Review. A Selection Review Panel, approved by the Local Authority, will consider each individual case on its own merit. Reviews will take place before any allocations to Buckinghamshire grammar schools are made.

In cases where there are more successful applicants than available places, Aylesbury Grammar School uses the following oversubscription criteria, giving priority to:

• Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children within the catchment area
• Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children who live outside the school’s catchment area, or other boys living in the catchment area who qualify for Free School Meals and achieved a high score in the STT 
• Boys who have a sibling who currently attends the school
• Students who have a sibling who currently attends Aylesbury High School
• Boys who have a sibling that once attended the school
• Children of staff at Aylesbury Grammar School
• Students with medical or social reasons for attending the school
• Students who live in the school’s catchment area
• All other boys

How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to Aylesbury Grammar School

Registration for the Secondary Transfer Test happens automatically if your child attends a state funded Buckinghamshire primary school.

If your child doesn’t attend a state funded primary school in the county, you need to apply for the test through the Buckinghamshire County Council website. The closing date for this is in June.

Please note that you should also notify your Local Authority of your child’s preferred schools by submitting a CAF form before the October closing date.

Secondary Transfer Test results are communicated in the same month, and allocations of places are made in March.
