Aldenham School: Entry Procedure for 11 Plus/Year 7

If you are considering Year 7 entry to Aldenham School for your child, please read on to learn about the school, its admissions procedure and how to help your child prepare for the entrance exam.

 

Aldenham School is an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3-18. It is located in the stunning countryside of Hertfordshire and benefits from being less than half an hour from central London. Founded in 1597, the school has a rich history, starting as a boys’ school but becoming fully co-educational in 2007.

 

Academic success is a priority at Aldenham School. In Years 7-9, students are regularly assessed and given grades for their academic attainment and their attitude to learning. There is a focus on English and maths, as literacy and numeracy are crucial for other subjects, too. In Year 9, students, with guidance, will pick their GCSE subjects.

 

The co-curricular programme at Aldenham School is extensive and designed to ensure pupils receive a holistic education. The Aldenham Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has an Army and Air Force Section, with pupils in the Air Force Section receiving at least one flying lesson! The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is available for pupils from Year 9 onwards. Additionally, many trips are arranged, both nearby and abroad. 

 

Aldenham School is proud to have the wellbeing of pupils at the heart of all it does. Every pupil has a personal tutor and belongs to a House overseen by a housemaster or housemistress. This means every pupil is known as an individual and has staff members they can turn to for support and guidance. Pupils also have access to a trained listener and counsellor.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Aldenham School

 

Aldenham School recommends that you attend an open event and have a tour of the school while your child is in Year 5. When you visit the school, consider whether you want your child to board, as you must indicate this on the registration form. 

 

You should register your child for a Year 7 place between the summer term of Year 5 and mid-November of Year 6 (there will be a £180 non-refundable registration fee). Aldenham will then request a reference from your child’s current school and a recent school report. 

 

Typically, your child will be invited to Aldenham for an interview before the date of their entrance exam. You will be present at the interview with them.

 

Your child will likely take the online entrance exam at their current school. Taking it in a familiar setting will reduce nerves, making the process easier for your child. However, Aldenham will hold exam sessions for candidates whose schools cannot facilitate the entrance exam.

 

Offers will be made to candidates who shine in the interview, excel in the entrance exam and have a glowing report and reference from their current school. Ultimately, Aldenham is looking for children who can access its challenging curriculum and fully engage in life outside the classroom.

 

If your child is offered a place, you must accept it by the deadline in March and pay the acceptance deposit to secure the place. The deposit is £1,500 for UK students and is offset against your child’s final term’s additional expenses.   

 

Scholarships and bursaries are available for Year 7 entry.

Scholarships

Candidates who perform well in the interview and entrance exam will be considered for an academic scholarship. 

 

Other scholarships can be applied for when registering (art, drama, design & technology, music and sport). Scholarship assessments will be held during the autumn term while your child is in Year 6. The awards will be given to pupils with exceptional talent in their chosen area and are reviewed annually.  

 

Bursaries

Only a limited number of bursaries are available. Currently, it is unlikely that bursaries can be offered that would cover a significant portion of the fees. If you need a high level of financial assistance for your child to be able to attend Aldenham, discuss this with the school before registering by emailing fees@aldenham.com.   

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Aldenham School Year 7 Entrance Exam  

 

 We recommend the following:

 

• Start preparation early.

 

If you start study sessions long before the entrance exam, you can keep the study sessions short and avoid last-minute panic. Short sessions are best because most children around the age of ten can focus for thirty minutes at a time.

 

• Encourage your child to read regularly.

 

Reading will broaden your child’s vocabulary and improve their spelling, punctuation and grammar. 

 

• Promote a growth mindset.

 

A growth mindset is the belief that we can all improve our abilities through determination and commitment. It is about seeing setbacks as an opportunity to learn and grow. Praising your child for their efforts will encourage this positive attitude.

 

• Go over Year 5 work.

 

Revising work from Year 5 will give your child a strong foundation and help cement the knowledge they need in their mind. It will also help you identify any areas they find challenging. You can then allocate additional study sessions to address these problematic areas. 

 

• Use practice tests.
