Introduction

Al-Burhan Grammar School is an independent day school in Birmingham. Catering exclusively for girls, it nurtures an Islamic ethos and provides a warm and welcoming learning environment for a cohort of bright pupils aged 11-16. [1]

ABGS, as the school is commonly referred to, boasts a comprehensive curriculum aimed at enhancing girls’ learning across all the key domains. Besides the common subject options, like English, mathematics, natural sciences, technology and humanities, the school also offers bespoke Living Islam and Quranic Studies modules and includes Urdu and Arabic in its languages syllabus.

Within the scope of the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) programme, girls have every opportunity to explore their leadership capacity. Aimed at maximising pupils’ transferable skills, the pursuits of the programme combine religious education with teamwork, ensuring that the holistic development of pupils integrates different aspects of morality, faith and manners. [2]

From a pastoral perspective, Al-Burhan is deeply committed to the well-being of its students, providing a robust framework of care and guidance. The school encourages girls to broaden their horizons by engaging in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, spanning from rigorous academic competitions to impactful charitable initiatives. ABGS prioritises students’ welfare, cultivating a nurturing environment where they can confidently discover and refine their unique talents and capabilities.
