Introduction
Haberdashers’ Adams is a grammar day and boarding school in Newport, Shropshire. Founded in 1656, Adams boasts a long alumni list, including inventors, journalists, politicians and professors. [1]
The school teaches an increasing number of international students, especially from Hong Kong, and is a specialist language and technology college. Haberdashers’ Adams belongs to the West Midlands 11+ Consortium, a group of schools that use the same entrance exam format and share a very similar admissions process.
How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to Haberdashers’ Adams
Haberdashers’ Adams is part of the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership. Accordingly, it administers a standardised 11+ entrance test, shared by all the schools in the consortium.
All 11+ applications should be completed through a registration portal, available on the school page from May. The registration deadline is in June of the year preceding entry.
Your child will be assessed at a local test centre and results will be shared with all the schools of interest, which should be listed in a ranked order on the Local Authority Preference Form.

Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The entrance test for Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School will be conducted by the Consortium of grammar schools in Shropshire, Walsall, and Wolverhampton, which is a part of the larger West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership. The West Midlands Grammar Schools 11+ exam consists of two papers, each lasting approximately 50-60 minutes long (including time for instructions and sample questions). They cover:
- English Comprehension
- Verbal Reasoning
- Mathematics
- Non-Verbal + Spatial Reasoning
The weightings for the test results are 50% for English/verbal reasoning, 25% for non-verbal reasoning and 25% for mathematics.
The English Comprehension paper examines comprehension skills, including inference. There will be no writing component.
The Verbal Reasoning section of the exam assesses logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Mathematics paper measures problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including questions on number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.
The exam will also cover Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning, both testing logic and intelligence.
Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Pass Marks and Target Scores
The admissions rate at Adams Grammar varies from year to year, depending largely on the academic strength of the cohort. Pupils who are able to score 80%+ consistently in our 11+ practice tests should be on track to pass the 11+ test.
