We’re excited to let you know about our new pack:
Who is this pack designed for?
This pack will benefit all students aiming to improve their spelling in the run-up to the 11+ exam. However, it will prove especially beneficial for students sitting:
– 11+ English GL Assessment grammar school exams (such as in Kent, Bucks and many other regions)
If you’re unsure if this pack will be relevant for your child, let us know which school/s you are applying to and we will confirm for you.
Unlike Spelling Packs 1 and 2, which are open answer, Pack 3 is designed in a multiple-choice format to closely match the style used in 11+ GL Grammar School assessments.
Why is spelling important?
If your child’s 11+ grammar school exam is set by GL Assessment, their exam will include a number of questions that are specifically designed to test their ability to spell by identifying errors in sentences. This is part of the Technical English section of the test.
These questions will account for around 16% of the total marks available in the English exam. Clearly therefore, having a solid grasp of this skill can make a huge difference to a child’s overall score.
How will this pack benefit my child?
We’ve systematically gone through the relevant curricula and syllabi to identify the various types of spelling questions that are tested in these exams.
This pack therefore covers the variations that your child needs to be aware of. Furthermore, the questions are displayed and presented as they will be in the actual exam.
Completing the tests in this pack will ensure that there are no surprises on exam day, allowing your child to face these questions with confidence, knowing what to expect and how to respond.
What is included in the pack?
There are 20 tests in total. The first 12 tests each focus on specific types of spelling errors, allowing your child to become familiar with the various categories.
The final 8 tests each contain a variety of these types mixed together, just like in the actual exam. These tests will reinforce the knowledge that your child acquired in the first 12 tests.
Each test contains 12 questions, so there are 240 questions in total. We’ve deliberately chosen words that are known to come up in these exams, and that students find difficult to spell.
The tests are broken down as follows:
Test 1: Words ending in -ant, -ance, -ancy and -ent, -ence, -ency
Test 2: Words ending in -able and -ible, -ably and -ibly
Test 3: Words with suffixes
Test 4: Endings that sound like ‘shus’ and ‘shul’
Test 5: Endings that sound like ‘shun’
Test 6: Words with the ‘k’, ‘sh’ and ‘g’ sounds but with unusual spellings
Test 7: Words with the ‘ay’ sound and the ‘ee’ sound
Test 8: Silent letters
Test 9: Homophones and near homophones
Tests 10-12: Frequently misspelt words
Tests 13-20: Mixed sentences
Answer sheets are included, so your child can get used to marking their answers as they will need to do in the actual exam.
Answers are included.
