Introduction
Haberdashers’ Boys’ School (HABS Boys), formerly known as Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, is an independent school in Elstree, Hertfordshire. Founded in 1690, it occupies a Grade II* listed building, located at the heart of the magnificent 104-acre campus. The curriculum in the Senior School boasts a ranging selection of subject areas, through which Habs Boys actively prepares students for the world of work and life. Lessons are delivered for mathematics, English, science, languages, computing, ICT, art and DT, among others, maximising pupils’s academic skills in parallel with their social versatility.

Haberdashers’ Boys’ School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions
Registration forms for Year 7 places should be submitted no later than the deadline in November of the year preceding entry.
The entrance examinations take place in mid-November, consisting of an online test. The following month, top-performing applicants will be invited back to the school to be interviewed.
Haberdashers’ Boys’ School 11 Plus (11+) Scholarships and Bursaries
The school offers both Scholarships and Bursaries to 11+ applicants. Academic Scholarships typically cover 10-20% of fees and are offered to the most successful candidates in the entrance examinations and interviews. For this award, the school does not require separate applications.
Art Scholarships cover 10% of fees and are offered on the basis of a portfolio and interview. Drama Scholarships typically carry the same value, as do Music Scholarships. When evaluating prospective scholars, the school also takes into consideration their academic ability, demonstrated in the entrance examinations. More details are available here.
Means-tested bursaries are offered to applicants whose parents are in a need of financial help with paying the fees. Full remission (100% of fees) is typically offered to families whose household gross income is below £38000.

Haberdashers’ Boys’ School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format
The Haberdashers’ Boys’ School Round 1 11+ exam consists of:
- Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning (45 minutes)
- English and Verbal Reasoning (40 minutes)
- Creative Comprehension (20 minutes)
- Creative Writing (20 minutes)
The Maths section evaluates arithmetic and problem-solving skills, with some questions featuring diagrams or charts. Non-Verbal Reasoning focuses on spatial and visual reasoning through multiple-choice questions. The English section assesses reading comprehension, grammar, and punctuation using a multiple-choice format while Verbal Reasoning measures vocabulary knowledge and the ability to interpret meaning from context. Creative Comprehension evaluates pupil’s ability to extract and interpret information from a variety of sources, including texts, maps, diagrams, timetables, and charts, through multiple-choice questions. Finally, Creative Writing assesses a pupil’s ability to craft imaginative and engaging written responses, evaluating skills such as vocabulary range, creative expression, narrative structure, and the ability to develop ideas with originality and flair.

Round 2
During the second stage of the HABS 11+ admissions process, approximately half of the applicants are invited to attend an interview.
On the same day, parents are invited to take part in an informal conversation with members of the senior leadership team.
