Introduction
Located in Cambridge, St Mary’s School educates girls from the age of 3 to 18. It is an independent school that has boarding as an option from Year 5 onwards. Although proud of its rich Catholic heritage, St Mary’s welcomes girls of all faiths and those who have no faith at all. It is worth pointing out that parents are expected to support the school’s Catholic ethos and religious values though.
St Mary’s teachers are experts when it comes to educating girls. Girls are taught to reject negative stereotypes that might hold them back, and they learn to believe in themselves. The school is a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA), which means staff are committed to empowering girls.
Outside of the classroom, girls can develop their existing talents and discover new passions. With a vast array of activities to choose from, there is something for everyone. In addition to this, pupils enjoy regular trips to museums, galleries, exhibitions and the University of Cambridge. Residential trips are also arranged. Recently, Year 6 went to Normandy and thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in a different culture.
Pastoral care at St Mary’s is exemplary. All members of the school are expected to treat each other with respect and kindness. Sixth Formers visit new students to help them settle in and provide a listening ear, and the school’s chaplains are always on hand to support any girl experiencing difficulties.

If a place is available for Year 6 entry, and you feel the school is a good fit for your child, you should then fill out the registration form and pay the registration fee, which is £100 if you are applying for a day place and £150 for a boarding place.
You can then expect your daughter to be invited to St Mary’s for a Taster Day to experience what life is like at the school. During this day, she will sit an entrance assessment, which comprises a creative writing paper and an online test.
Your daughter will also attend an interview and have a reference from her current school assessed as part of the admissions process.
Should she be successful in all the areas of the admissions process, she may be offered a place at St Mary’s. Offers are usually made the week after the entrance assessment.
You need to accept any offer by the deadline given in the offer letter. Additionally, you will need to pay the acceptance deposit.

St Mary’s School, Cambridge: 10 Plus (10+)/Year 6 Entrance Assessment
The entrance assessment is designed to see if your daughter will be able to access St Mary’s challenging curriculum and thrive at the school.
The creative writing paper will enable the school, amongst other things, to see how well your daughter can use her imagination, structure her work and adapt her style of writing to suit the given task. The standard of her spelling, punctuation and grammar will also be assessed.
The online test will evaluate your daughter’s non-verbal reasoning abilities, focusing on her skill in interpreting visual information, such as recognising patterns or relationships among shapes. Additionally, it will assess her understanding of mathematical concepts aligned with the relevant national curriculum stage. Her vocabulary maturity will also be part of the evaluation.
