Introduction
Loughborough Grammar School (LGS) is an independent day and boarding school for boys aged 10 to 18. Established in 1495, it is one of the oldest private schools in the country. While the school takes pride in its rich history, LGS is forward-looking and dynamic.
Academically, LGS is impressive. Boys develop into independent learners who take responsibility for their education. Rather than passively absorbing information, they actively engage in the learning process. By the time they leave LGS, they are well-equipped to succeed in the wider world.
The co-curricular programme at LGS is exceptional, offering over 140 clubs and societies, including Drones Club, Swimming Club, Art Club and Model Car Club. Participation helps pupils grow into confident, well-rounded young men.
At LGS, each boy is recognised as an individual, making them feel valued and supported. The staff work diligently to create a safe and secure environment, with Tutors readily available to offer guidance and support whenever needed.
Loughborough Grammar School: Admissions Process for 10 Plus (10+)/Year 6 Entry
The first step in the admissions process is to visit LGS so you can meet staff and current pupils and explore the facilities. You can arrange a Personal Tour on a school day, attend an Open Morning or have your son experience life at LGS by joining a Taster Day.
If you feel your son would thrive at LGS, you should fill out the registration form and pay the registration fee: £100 for a day place if you reside in the UK and £130 for a day place if you reside overseas or are applying for a boarding place. The deadline for registering will be in December of Year 5.
To join Year 6 at the start of the school year, your son will sit the following three papers in January of Year 5:
- English comprehension paper
- English writing paper
- Maths paper
To be offered a place at LGS, candidates must perform well in the entrance papers and have an excellent report from their current school. Offers will be made within two weeks of the assessments being sat. Sometimes candidates will be invited in for a meeting before a final decision is made.
You will need to accept any offer made by the deadline given in the offer letter. This will involve submitting the acceptance form and paying the acceptance deposit.
Please note that boys can be assessed throughout the year, so do contact LGS if your son misses the January assessments.

Preparing for the Loughborough Grammar School 10 Plus (10+)/Year 6 Entrance Papers
Preparing for competitive entrance exams is highly advisable and can give candidates an edge over those who do not prepare. However, knowing where to start can be challenging. That’s why we have produced targeted resources designed to help your son get ready for the LGS Year 6 entrance exam and perform well on the day.
Using our resources will allow your son to understand what will be expected of him in the entrance exam. This will remove any fear of the unknown, meaning he should feel calm and confident when he sits down to take the exam, which will help him perform to the best of his ability.
Moreover, working through our resources will enable your son to identify his weak areas and gaps in his knowledge. He can then dedicate time to addressing these issues before the exam, which could be the key to securing a place at LGS.
