Introduction
Founded in 1845 as the first Victorian public school in Sussex, Brighton College is an independent co-educational day and boarding school. It is a highly successful establishment, one of the best in the country, which regularly tops the league tables and whose junior department is equally thriving. [1]

During one of the school’s Open Mornings, you and your family will have the opportunity to tour facilities and get a firsthand look at the education on offer at Brighton Prep. All 8+ applicants should be registered with the school prior to the January examinations. The tests are standardised, assessing your child’s skills across a broad range of areas.
Offers are normally made by the end of the same month. Please note that places are secured with a payment of a deposit, refunded during your child’s last term at the school.
Brighton College Prep School 8 Plus (8+) Exam Format
All registered candidates will be invited to sit examinations in:
- English
- Mathematics
- Verbal Reasoning
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
The English assessment examines comprehension skills, including inference and grammar. The paper will be in the multiple-choice format.
The Maths exam, also in the multiple-choice format, assesses problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills, including your child’s knowledge of times tables.
The Verbal Reasoning test is designed to test and assess logical thinking, use of English language and vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning test measures the ability to understand, interpret and problem-solve, testing logic and intelligence rather than knowledge.
Brighton College Prep School 8 Plus (8+) Exam Pass Marks and Target Scores
Pupils who are able to score 70%+ consistently in our 8+ practice tests should be on track to pass the Brighton 8+ assessment.
Whilst there are no guarantees, this has historically been a fairly strong indicator that your child should do well in the Brighton College Prep 8 plus exam.
Don’t worry if your child is not scoring well in our practice papers from the outset. With targeted practice and focus, it’s possible to make big improvements in a short amount of time!
