Introduction
Founded in 1876, South Hampstead High School (SHHS) is an independent day school in Hampstead, north-west London. Its motto is More Light and its educational provision is delivered accordingly, securing pupils’ strong achievements that place it among the top-performing schools nationally. [1]
SHHS is a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), a leading network of independent girls’ schools in the UK. Its progressive curriculum places a clear focus on developing literacy and numeracy skills and daily lessons are provided in each of these subjects. To ensure that girls develop a depth of knowledge, the syllabus covers a range of further disciplines, including technology, humanities and arts.
Music is a strength. From Year 1, girls take part in a ‘Strings Project’ where they learn either the violin or cello as a class group. Opportunities in music continue as girls progress through the school, with nearly every girl learning an instrument and/or taking part in the many bands, ensembles and choirs. [2]
Clubs include gardening, Spanish, ballet and drama, as well as a huge range of sporting activities. These ensure that girls develop relevant skills and strong social proficiency, as well as firm friendships that enrich their lives in the long run. South Hampstead High School 7 Plus (7+) Admissions
Around 24 new pupils are welcomed at 7+. The deadline for registrations is in November of the year preceding entry and the registration fee is a total of £150.
In the following stage of the admissions process, your child will be invited to attend Taster Day. During the session, she will take part in exciting activities and have plenty of fun with current pupils.
The 7+ examinations have two rounds. Round one takes place in November and includes written papers. Round two takes place in January and includes group activities. Please note that SHHS has a high academic pedigree and is looking for girls with potential who will flourish in its unique environment.

South Hampstead High School 7 Plus (7+) Exam Format
The 7+ entrance examinations consist of papers in the following areas:
- English (creative writing and reading comprehension)
- Mathematics (problem solving and arithmetic)
The English assessment evaluates comprehension, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The exam also assesses the fluency of your daughter’s oral skills, including her reading proficiency.
The maths exam is focused on evaluating your daughter’s problem-solving abilities and arithmetic skills. This includes assessing her knowledge of mathematical concepts, including times tables, and her ability to apply these concepts to solve problems.

South Hampstead High School: Destination Schools at 11+
It is assumed that all girls will progress to the Senior School. In the Spring term of Year 5, the majority of girls will receive an unconditional, confirmed offer of a place in Year 7 of the Senior School. This means that girls from the Junior School will not sit the 11+ entrance test unless she wishes to apply for a scholarship or a bursary.
The Junior School’s subject coordinators liaise closely with the Heads of Departments in the Senior School to ensure a smooth transition.
